-
Be aware of your schedule and theirs: There may be different time zones depending on where you go to school and where your friends and family are located. It is imperative to keep in mind what your friends and families daily schedule and routine may look like. Try to find a time whether it’s in the morning, afternoon, or evening that is convenient for the both of you. This will allows you to communicate efficiently and on a timely manner.
-
Schedule a day to catch up: As you find a time that works equally and conveniently it is now essential to find a day that is equally convenient also. Typically Sunday’s are the most convenient days as it is the end of the week and people are now preparing for the following week. Scheduling a designated time and day allows you to always be able to catch up with your friends and family without going through the hassle of playing phone tag.
-
Have an agenda: While catching up with friends and family it is normal to ramble about things that are going on in your life. Instead, take the time to write down things you want to discuss. This will allow you to have a train of thought and focus on what you would like to talk about during the designated speaking time.
-
Be understanding: It is really easy to get upset when someone isn’t responsive to your texts or phone calls. However, it is important to understand that people get busy and may not always be able to text or call you back right away. When this happens it is key to remain patient and understanding and simply wait for them to reach back out to you.
5. Jealousy is the ugliest trait: As you’re away at college you will begin to miss the things you did with your friends and family back home. It is important to not become envious and jealous when seeing your friends and family having fun without you. Instead, communicate with them about how much fun the activity looked and how much you wished you were there. 9 times out of 10 they will feel the exact same way.
As you transition into college life you will begin making new friends and will have less time available to speak to your back home friends and family which is okay. By using these 5 tips you will see how easy it is to maintain your relationships back home while away at college. In the meantime, enjoy your time away from home and make new friends, experiences, and memories to share with your back home friends and family!Â
