Kirsten Johnson, Miss Delta Charm 2016-2017

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CAU chapter.

NAME: Kirsten S. Johnson

HOMETOWN: Baltimore, Maryland

CLASSIFICATION: Sophomore

MAJOR: Mass Media Arts with a concentration in Radio/TV/film

IG/TWITTER: @kissesbeginw_k1

DREAM JOB: Opening up my own dance school, and having several branches in different states over the U.S.

DREAM DATE: Honestly, I haven’t thought of a dream date yet.

TOP OF BUCKET LIST: To visit Thailand.

WHAT/WHO INSPIRES YOU? As cliché as it may sound, my mother inspires me the absolute most. Her love shines so bright, her determination is like no other, and her level of selflessness is out of this world. Everything she is, is what I inspire to be and then I can pass it on to someone else.

ONE THING YOU CAN’T LEAVE THE HOUSE WITHOUT: My cell phone

SHORT-TERM GOALS: To finish this spring semester off strong, have several phenomenal events as the 2016-2017 Miss Delta Charm that brings the AUC together, and get an internship over the summer in my field of choice.

LONG-TERM GOALS: Graduating from the Illustrious Clark Atlanta University on time as well as on the Dean’s List. Another long-term goal is opening up my own dance academy and just continuously living a happy and healthy life like I do now.

CELEBRITY CRUSH: None.

FAVORITE QUOTE: I have so many favorite quotes which makes picking only one so hard. However if I had to pick one it would be “If it doesn’t challenge you, It won’t change you”. This quote reminds me that good things don’t come easy. Hard work beats talent any day.

HOBBIES: Doing makeup, community service, and exercising.

FAVORITE HANGOUT SPOT: My bed because I love to take naps when I can.

WHY CAU? In high school I never had a “dream school” like most people I know. But when I visited Clark Atlanta University for the first time I felt at home as soon as I stepped on the campus. From that moment on, I knew CAU was the university for me.

ORGANIZATIONS ON CAMPUS: National Council of Negro Women where I serve as CCO representative, Campus Activity Board, and The Essence Dance Line.

SOMETHING NO ONE KNOWS: If I told you it wouldn’t be a secret anymore, right? lol

ONE PIECE OF ADVICE: Never give up on something that you can’t go a day without thinking about. I always remind myself that anything God brought me to, he can get me through.

WHY WERE YOU INSPIRED TO DANCE? What inspired me to dance is the fact that it’s a God given gift and I wouldn’t dare waist such a divine talent that God saw fit for me to have. It’s my way of communication, and my body is my instrument. The passion and soul it brings out of me inspires me to want to inspire others.

WHAT MADE YOU WANNA BECOME APART OF THE ESSENCE DANCELINE AND HOW HAS IT MADE AN IMPACT ON YOUR STAY HERE AT CAU? I’ve been dancing since the age of two. Over the years I have learned and performed several different styles of dance. Clark Atlanta University doesn’t have a dance major, however, I knew that I just couldn’t stop dancing when I came to school. I did some research and came across The Essence Dance line. It was definitely a change in style for me, but change is good! Being on Essence has had a huge impact on my stay here at CAU because I couldn’t imagine my college experience without being on a dance line for a HBCU band, there’s nothing like it.

WHAT DO YOU LOOK FORWARD TO WHEN PERFORMING AT HALFTIME? When performing at half time I look forward to the adrenaline rush that I get every performance. It’s an unexplainable feeling that I wouldn’t trade for anything!

DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN 3 WORDS: Selfless, Motivational, and Loving

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE A BLACK GIRL? Magical. Black women are the greatest gift that God has blessed this earth with.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT BLACK MEN? The thing that I love the most about black men would have to be their persistence. Their persistence to let the world know that no matter what adversities society throws at them, they will keep going.

FORMATION (BEYONCE) OR WORK (RIHANNA): Formation (Beyoncé)

FUTURE OR YOUNG THUG: Future

YOU PARTICIPATED IN THE “MISS DELTA CHARM AND MR. CRIMSON AND CRÈME” SCHOLARSHIP PAGAENT. WHAT WAS YOUR PLATFORM AND HOW WAS THE EXPERIENCE BEING APART OF THE PROCESS? My platform is M.E.G.A, motivating, empowering, and growing the AUC. The Miss Delta Charm and Mr. Crimson and Crème scholarship pageant was one of the best experiences ever. It was a journey that taught me, stepping out of your comfort zone is well worth it. To get something you never had, you must do something you’ve never done. The process has also brought me closer to several individuals that I can now call my brothers, sisters, mentors, and pageant moms. The journey towards becoming Miss Delta Charm 2016-2017 was one I will never forget. It built character as well as bonds, and I am forever thankful for that. I’m eager to serve my institution and my community in a MEGA way.

TOP 5 SONGS OF 2016 THUS FAR: There are several songs out that I don’t mind listening to. However as of now, I do not have 5 favorites. I’m more of a 90’s R&B fan. But maybe by the end of 2016 I’ll have some songs I can actually call my favorite.
