How The SAVAGE X FENTY Fashion Show Rejuvenated Me Creatively

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CAU chapter.

If you haven’t seen the SAVAGE X FENTY show get someone’s Amazon Prime account information now and go watch ASAP! The show was amazing and it completely changed my perspective of what a fashion show is, plus what you can do by creatively combining makeup, music, fashion, and a stage show.

I know that in these last few months of 2019 or of any year it can be hard to get recharged creatively but I’m telling you now if you watch this show you will get so many ideas of what you can do as a #BOSS. These are some of my favorite moments from the show that made me gasp and want to go harder at chasing my dreams at the same damn time.

1. Rihanna Opening the Show

We have been waiting for Rihanna to do something, anything, maybe singing (LOL) on a stage for almost 3 years after her last album ANTI. And she did it. Not “it” like singing but something on a stage. She opened the show! It was dynamic, fierce, and radiated the energy of a woman commanding her energy and power. During the documentary, she revealed how she learned the opening choreography in almost 3 days before the show.

This was one of the iconic moments to me because Rihanna, other women, and myself, like to present our work. However, sometimes we think it might be corny or vain to be in it ourselves. Even Rihanna didn’t think about being in her own show until 3 days before! But this just reminded me that I can be a star in my own creations and be incredibly proud of my work through that expression. It’s totally fine to be a star in your own show!

2. NORMANI as a solo artist

I know that this may be old news but as a black girl, a brown-skinned black girl doing Pop Music at this level is iconic. Normani is that girl. The message that I got from her performance is that

 1. I need to go workout.

 2. While it may be incredibly terrifying to take a chance going solo, starting your business, recording a song, making a YouTube channel, or even recording a show, whatever it is you have to just go do it. Normani has expressed this year that it was very hard for her to take that leap at going solo and finding her own voice, but as you can see she is living in it and she looks so happy doing it. Her performance just made me want to stop waiting to live out my dreams and just do it now.

3. Rihanna giving the BTS of Being a Mogul

Let us clap it up for the gems Rihanna dropped in this Savage X Fenty show. She spoke on how to businesswoman and the realities of how much work it really takes. Rihanna showcased her journey of picking out every fabric, style, the set for the show, the performances, and almost every detail there is. She was discussing and planning the Savage X Fenty show 3 weeks before, every night until 3 am making key decisions, All the hard work was to produce the show of her dreams even when she was in different countries on different time zones. Rihanna wanted to feel every fabric, see it worn on multiple bodies, how many zippers it had, how big the tags were, and made sure that every detail was a reflection of her. When you are over your brand you have to be incredibly involved to produce the product you truly see in your visions.

4. Inclusion on the Runway

Rihanna is known for making sure that inclusion is seen in her beauty line and in her lingerie line. And once again, she did not disappoint. She represented paraplegic women, albino women, mothers, breast cancer survivors, curvy women, skinny women, Latino women, Asian women, Black women, Trans women, models, men, and disabled women in one showcase. This true diversity was inspiring to see as women because you can not only see yourself in one way throughout this show but in multiple ways. It is incredibly comforting and needed in mass media.

5. The Fusion of Music, Art, Fashion, Makeup and Performance

The show broadcasted to the world that you can combine all of your passions and skills into one. You can have a true passion for music and be interested in medicine, love art and sports, or fashion and music. It all can be fused together to create something you want and love. Rihanna has mastered that concept with the creation of the Savage X Fenty show because she brought her love for live performance, makeup & beauty, dance, and fashion together in this modern display of her lingerie line. Seeing this all come together in the show just demonstrated to me that I don’t ever have to give my interest to solely focus on one thing. I have the capacity to be interested in multiple facets of life and if I want to, I can bring together whenever I please.
