H.E.R. and… H.I.M.?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CAU chapter.

H.E.R., Having Everything Revealed, aka Gabi Wilson, burst onto the scene last September with her soulful voice and relatable lyrics with Vol. 1. A month later H.I.M., HER In Mind, released his Vol. 1. The same thing happened when H.E.R. released Vol. 2 June of this year; it was followed by July’s H.I.M. Vol. 2. Continuing the tradition, H.E.R. released a full album in October, followed by an album from H.I.M. in November (BOTH great, may I add.)

Each of H.I.M.’s songs is a reaction to one of H.E.R.’s tracks. “Losing” versus “Winning,” “Best Part” versus “Worst Part,” “Focus” versus “Blur,” “U” versus “Me & U,” and on and on. If H.E.R.’s lyrics reflect heartbreak, H.I.M’s lyrics react with a defensive tone in response. On the flip side, in “Habits,” H.I.M.’s response to H.E.R.’s love song “Changes” about how she’s finally ready to be in a relationship, he goes deeper into the love song theme, claiming that he’ll do anything to keep her and at times doesn’t think he deserves her. This carries on throughout the entire track list, creating an interesting listening experience, in my opinion.

But, H.E.R. clearly has some issues with how H.I.M. is going about his singing career, believing that he is mooching off of her own.

Now, I love them both and honestly don’t see a problem with his response albums, but I can see how she could be upset about it. They both make great music that we can vibe to, and would really move mountains as a sort of duo, but that’s just me.
