Dressing for You: A Quick Guide to Dressing for your Body Type

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CAU chapter.

Big, small, short, or tall, every woman have dreaded going shopping at least once in her life. We walk into the store and see something that looks amazing on the mannequin, but when we try it on, that smile quickly turns into a frown. Well ladies, get ready to throw that frown in reverse! Here are a few tips to ensure that your next shopping trip is a breeze!

Banana Baddies (Slim Lower Body but Carry Weight in the Middle)

Your goal: to highlight the slim part of the waist so your bust and hips appear larger and more proportional. Invest in some ruffled blouses! Ruffles around your bust create a larger vision, which proportionally makes your waist look smaller. Shopping for a skirt? Look out for some cute minis. A fitted skirt will accentuate ANY curve you have, and a short hemline will show off your slim legs.

Avoid: shapeless clothes, anything boxy.

Apple Lovely’s (Smaller at the Bottom but Larger at the Top)

Although you may be smaller at the bottom with a little extra in the middle, there are some great things you can do to flatter your figure! Flowy tops help decrease emphasis on your mid-section. Also, pants that sit low on your hips decrease any kind of stomach bulge.

Avoid: clingy shirts/dresses, patterns in the mid-section, thick belts, and high waist jeans

Pear-fect Ladies (The Widest Part Around your Body is your Hips)

Showing off your hips is great, but don’t forget to show some love to your top half. A structured, printed jacket would be a great start! The prints on the jacket automatically draws attention to your top half and gives structure to the shoulder area, making the bottom half seem smaller in comparison. Also, an A-line skirt highlights the smaller part of your waist and flares out over your hips.

Avoid: details at the hip/rear, tight-fitting skirts.

Hourglass Hotties (Curvy with a Tiny Waist)

If you got it, flaunt it! Your curves are your FRIEND! The key to looking great is to highlight your curves by EMPHASIZING your waist. A crop top and pencil skirt combo is perfect for showing off that hourglass shape! The pencil skirt accentuates your curves and smoothes out your thighs! Belts are also very beneficial! They’re great for making your small waist the focal point, as well as securing the fit of a great pair of wide leg pants/jeans! Look for belted jackets or any kind of jacket that draws in toward or sits at the waist.

Avoid: tops, jackets, and dresses with straight lines.

I hope these tips and tricks help some of you ladies with your next trip to the mall, and remember, when you LOOK good, you FEEL good.
