Blueface Baby? Yea Ight, Meet The Rap Game’s New Offbeat Barsmith

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CAU chapter.

2018 came to a close and as a result, we saw many new faces rise to the top in both the mainstream and underground rap game. Names such as XXXtentacion and 6ix9ine took over the internet and the airwaves while other artists such as Lil Baby, JID, A Boogie, and Ski Mask showed that the new wave is in good hands. This year, the reoccurring pattern has been artists going viral taking them from virtually unknown to the top of the charts in a matter of days. And rounding out the year came a brand new sensation from the LA scene, the famous cryp known as “Blueface.”

Blueface formally known as Johnathan Porter gained his first little bit of mainstream exposure after an interview from the popular Youtube channel “No Jumper” was posted and snippets were taken to Twitter for people to express their opinions about the Famous Cryp. The first song that pulled people into his offbeat style was “Next Big Thing”, where his confidence, bravado, and swagger reaches a peak at an almost pimp like level as his squeaky high pitched flow hops and skips around on a Yike Mike beat.

Although his voice is unlike anything heard in recent years and that there are many jokes about him being compared to sounding like Courage the Cowardly Dog, he never fails to let us know that he is about the real right gang affiliated lifestyle which he raps about. He has confidently stated that he will do whatever is necessary to succeed in the rap game regardless of what anybody thinks about him. His style might appear unorthodox at first, but a deeper look into it proves that he does indeed care deeply about his craft as Blueface’s delivery on double entendres is another weapon in his arsenal.

With bars such as “Talking out his neck till I leave his ass neckless”, “Mop the floor, hide the wet sign just to catch him slipping”, and “This ain’t no doctor’s office baby, I ain’t got no patience/patients”  it’s clear to see that just because the young man might sound funny does not mean that he should be taken lightly as a master of his craft. Although his tracks such as “Respect My Crypn”, “Deadlocs”, and “Thotiana” garnered him some notoriety, his first mainstream win came when went on the beat for his first hit record known as “Bleed Em.” Social media went absolutely bonkers when the song was first previewed on Instagram Live as people couldn’t believe that the song was just as good as it was set out to be.

The most recent achievement the 22-year-old had was when the biggest blood in the game, YG hopped on the remix for “Thotiana.” With all that being said, we still are anticipating his first album as we are sure to expect a bunch of LA gangster style club bangers. Although he hasn’t said anything on this topic, it’s clear that Blueface’s meteoric rise to stardom has made him the leader of the new school for the Los Angeles rap scene as it already has a crew of heavy hitters such as 1TakeJay, JamesTooCold, and Roddy Ricch to name a few. Blueface’s future is looking as bright as his grills and the rest of the rap world, both artists and fans alike can’t wait to see what he as in store for us. And for the rest that thinks otherwise or is still on the fence about him, to all you guys I say, yea ight. BOP!
