Are You Trying to Progress or Just Impress?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CAU chapter.

“Be as you wish to seem” – Socrates

You might think this is just another deep quote by an old philosopher that holds no value, other than being a topic for an English essay. If so, you’re wrong. This simple quote can actually teach this generation so much. Act like the person you want to be! ACT. Wow, so Socrates witnessed fake people portraying lives they didn’t actually live or qualities they didn’t have?  I thought that was just an issue with the most recent generations today. Well, Socrates is lucky he didn’t have a Twitter account.

In a time of everyone being on social media, many have an outlet to express their emotions, opinions and MOVES to their followers and the world. Now, don’t get me wrong. Making a post on what you want to do has never been an issue, hopefully you have supportive followers, but what is most important is what you do after you make the post. If you find yourself posting anything along the lines of “I need to *insert something positive and self improving*” and do not take actual steps to make it happen, then keep reading. If the person you perceive yourself as on social media does not match the person you really are, then this is for you.

This brings us to an issue many people face today, impression over progression. Ask yourself why you post your plans or moves on social media. Is it to look like a positive person? Is it to gain approval? Is it to brag or impress your followers? It’s upsetting how so many people have become content with looking like a productive person who is winning or “doing big things”, but lack the persistence to take the steps to actually win! Looking like you have it has become the goal of this generation. Looking rich. Looking positive. Looking successful. Are you the same person on and off of social media, though? So many teens and young adults are getting rich fast and achieving goals early, which puts pressure on those who feel the need to match their success. However, everyone has a different path and some paths take longer than others. You know what’s better than other people thinking you have money? ACTUALLY HAVING MONEY! You know what is more satisfying than posting your goals on social media to look like you’re being productive? ACTUALLY ACHIEVING YOUR GOALS! Let’s all aspire to actually be the person you act like you are.

Put your phone down.

Make a list of goals saying what you want to achieve and how to achieve them.

Make a list of things you want and come up with a budgeting plan to purchase it.

Keep your plans off of social media… DO IT BEFORE YOU POST IT!

Follow these tips, achieve your goals, then share your achievements with your friends and followers. Be as you wish to seem. You can be the person you want others to see you as; you can have the success you want others to think you have. Do not let impressing others be enough for you. Actually progress and self improve! YOU GOT THIS!
