With Constant Mentions Of Lula And Bolsonaro, The Candidates For Governor Of São Paulo Face Each Other For The First Time Since The First Round

On this Monday (10), the candidates for governor of the state of São Paulo were present in the first debate of the second round, broadcast by the Bandeirantes network. Fernando Haddad (PT) and Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans) have not faced each other since the first round, held on September 27, on Rede Globo.

Innovatively, Grupo Bandeirantes promoted a new concept of debate, which should be maintained at the meeting of the presidential candidates, next Sunday. Mediated by the journalist Rodolfo Schneider, the candidates were given 30 minutes to manage at their will during the confrontation block.

Topics such as vaccination, public security, and the presidential race were addressed by the candidates during the three blocks of the debate. The candidate of the  PT (workers party), Fernando Haddad, questioned his opponent regarding the actual president, Jair Bolsonaro’s policy on the Covid-19 vaccine. Whereas, Tarcisio de Freitas answered by punctuating the purchase of vaccines by the federal government.

On the issue of public security, Tarcísio questioned the efficiency of the cameras used by the military police in the state: “Regarding the cameras policy, we cannot have thieves in an advantage situation to the cops. So, taking off cameras already is a symbolic move, showing that the state is supporting this policeman. We are no longer admitting crime in the state of São Paulo, this is a message to criminals. If we look at the productivity of battalions in areas of influence with the camera, this productivity has dropped.”

The candidates for the presidential election, Lula and Bolsonaro, were frequently mentioned. Haddad questioned the ICMS issue, in addition to painting the 100 years of secrecy.  

In a debate marked by few direct attacks and a calm climate, the opponents let the debate with the hope of conquering more votes and demonstrating confidence in the search for the position at the Bandeirantes palace.
