In the theaters, we wait around 15 minutes to watch the second part of a play, but we’ve been waiting almost a year to see in the big screams the ending of the story of Elphaba and Glinda, in Wicked: For Good.
Since last year, there’s been a lot of expectation from the fans for the end of this story, and also a lot of curiosity of how the ending of this journey would be adapted to the cinema.
THE CHARACTERS DEVELOPMENT
First of all,it’s important to remember, that there’s a time gap of five years between Wicked: Part One and Wicked: For Good, which explains a lot about the way everyone acts, considering that it’s been a long time since Elphaba became a fugitive and Glinda a public figure in Oz.
Glinda is one of the most misunderstood characters in Wicked. Like all of them, she’s not just evil or good, and in this part, more than ever, it’s possible to understand her side and watch how her past actions built her future, and how her ambitions are conflicting with her feelings for Ephaba.
And to fully show who she truly is, she released a new solo song, “Girl in The Bubble”, composed by Stephen Schwartz, the original composer of the songs from Wicked.
Now, talking about Elphaba, she has a lot of development and changes, and more than ever, she’s free to protect what she believes. Her maturation is clear in this movie, she passed through a lot of things in the first movie, while she was discovering her powers and herself.
And just like Glinda, she owns a new song “No Place Like Home”, also composed by Stephen Schwartz, which gives us flashbacks from “The Wizard of Oz”, and represents the same phrase that Dorothy said three times in the end of the movie.
The other characters: Fiyero, Boq, Nessarose and even the Wizard, had a lot of development and had their narratives expanded, with new elements that explain and show different sides of them.
THE CONNECTION WITH “THE WIZARD OF OZ”
In Wicked: For Good, the most significant connection with “The Wizard of Oz”, includes Dorothy’s appearance, but not with a lot of details because it’s not the focus of Wicked, and for this reason, Dorothy’s face didn’t appear in the movie.
Even if this narrative isn’t the focus of Wicked, a lot of the events that happen in the original movie can be explained, like the appearance of Dorothy’s friends and why her house fell in Oz. Everything had a reason and looks so different from the story we’re used to hear in The Wizard of Oz.
EMOTIONAL AND HUMAN SCENES
One of the biggest characteristics from Wicked is how this universe full of magic and witches can be so similar to the real world, and this is so present in the second movie, once the characters have a bigger development and it is possible to see yourself in them.
The traumatic events in their lives, how fast everything suddenly happened, the responsibility they started to carry, the maturing and fate that the characters have, is so similar from real life.
If you thought that the first Wicked movie was emotional, you’ll cry your eyes out watching Wicked: For Good. The events are more serious and political. How everything happens here, connects the fans with the characters feelings, even if it’s in a world different from ours in many different ways.
OVERVIEW
The musical of Wicked has been existing for the past 20 years, surprising and captivating people around the world with an extension from the universe of Oz.With a lot of magic, fancy outfits, incredible places and an amazing cast, both Wicked movies captured the magic of cinema.
