Who Is The New Governor Of São Paulo And What To Expect From Him?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Casper Libero chapter.

Rodrigo Garcia and his trajectory in politics

Rodrigo Garcia calls himself a root paulista: he was born in the small town of Tanabi in the countryside of São Paulo, where he spent his childhood and teenage years in São José do Rio Preto. At the age of 18 he moved to the capital to study Law.

He entered politics very early, and at the age of 21 he worked alongside Mário Covas as São Paulo’s under-secretary of Agriculture. Since then, his life has been directed towards public management, being vice-governor, secretary of management of the city of São Paulo and secretary in the portfolios of Government, Housing, Economic Development and Social Development. In addition to having been president of the Legislative Assembly at the age of 30, federal deputy for two terms, and leader of the bench in Brasília.

Today, at the age of 47, he is the Governor of the State of São Paulo. He was deputy governor and secretary of government, coordinating all the strategic actions of the state: vaccines, concessions, public investments, public-private partnerships and all the major management programs of the other secretariats.

The new governor and his 2022 re-election campaign

Unexpectedly, the launch ceremony of his re-election campaign was held at the inauguration of a Bom Prato unit in Paraisópolis, in the south zone of the capital of São Paulo, which he called the “hunger first aid”.

The new governor, who is a pre-candidate for reelection, changed the ritual, since governors always take office in the Legislative Assembly and signed the book of his re-election campaign on a plastic table of the unit, reinforcing one of the main premises of his campaign, the fight against hunger.

In his social networks, Garcia already assumes a campaign tone:

“I know you didn’t vote for me to be governor, but I’m going to make an effort to be the governor that every paulista deserves to have. Whether you’re right, center or left, because I didn’t enter public life to change anyone’s ideology,” he says.

According to the specialist in electoral marketing, João Guilherme Peixo, Rodrigo Garcia will continue the work he has already done as vice governor. “He, in a way, had an active participation. He was never a lieutenant governor without charge, he always took over a good part of the government.  When he was Housing Secretary, for example, he participated in all CDHU draws. So he’s been preparing for this for a long time.”

Also according to João, as for re-election, even without being highlighted in the latest polls, Rodrigo Garcia should grow in the dispute for the state. “He is a very skilled politician, he has never lost an election, he has a good presence. He knows that he is a stranger to many people. But it will certainly grow a lot during the election campaign. Right now, he is a governor on the campaign trail.”
