For everyone who loves High School Musical, you can believe me when I tell you that you will not regret watching High School Musical: The Musical: the Series. It’s an amazing series, which perfectly honors the legacy of the movies. It is available on Disney+ since November 2019 and our beloved Season 2 is on the way!
Where were we?
Before we talk more about Season 2, let’s recap what happened in Season 1: the school hires a new drama teacher, Miss Jen, whose main goal is to do a High School Musical play in the school. In the first episodes, we see the characters going through auditions for the roles they want to play in the production. The fight to get the main ones, Gabriella and Troy, is intense.
That’s when we meet, fall in love and root for the couple Ricky and Nini, who are the protagonists of both the play and the series. They used to be a couple, but ended their relationship tensely. Now, Ricky is doing his best to win Nini back, in search of the role of Troy. By the way, the show did an amazing job exploring a little bit of each character. We see several characters standing out in the series, as they get to know each other a little better through their journey to the long-awaited opening night.
The holidays
Now that we are more aware of what happened on Season 1, let’s talk about the amazing Holiday Special that came out in December 2020 on Disney+. The cast of HSMTMTS reunited to sing some of their favorite holiday songs and talk about their family and their lives as kids. We also had the chance to see two of the songs that are going to be on Season 2: ‘The Perfect Gift’, written by Joshua Bassett, who plays Ricky on the show, and “Something In The Air”, performed by the whole cast.
What comes next
Since we’re done talking about everything that’s happened on HSMTMTS, let´s finally talk about what we know about the new season, because I know you’re as excited as I am. First of all: season 2 will be finally streaming on Disney+ on May 14th! It will follow the East High Wildcats as they get prepared to perform Beauty and the Beast as their spring musical and face their rivals at North High to win a prestigious student theater competition.
As announced by Billboard on February 11, two new stars are entering the cast, them being: the television/film star and singer Asher Angel (“Shazam!”) and Broadway veteran Andrew Barth Feldman (“Dear Evan Hansen”, “Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical”). Speaking of the new songs, each one of the actors from HSMTMTS wrote an original song to be included in this new season. One of them, that I’ve already talked about, is “The Perfect Gift”:
The other one, “Something In The Air”, chosen for the opening number of the sequel, is also available. We also got to see the whole performance on the Holiday Special, where we got a little taste of what’s coming.
The last thing we can tell you is that the official Instagram account of the series @highschoolmusicalseries is really teasing us with some short videos, that are sort of a bridge of what will happen in this next season. Every single one of these videos shows two characters talking to each other, giving an update about how their lives are right after the end of the first season.
