The premiere of “The Batman” on March 3, 2022, in theaters, intrigued many fans. The cinematographic work brings with it a proposal and plot formation different from those previously seen in other films of the franchise. The director, Matt Reeves, deliberately bets on realism and presents the audience with a hero still under construction, investigating crimes and trying to bring justice to Gotham City taken by corruption.

After Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale, and Ben Affleck played Bruce Wayne, the poor rich boy who lost his parents in a tragic context, it’s Robert Pattinson‘s turn to show his intriguing version of the new Batman. However, one of the great highlights of the film is Zoë Kravitz, who gives life to the anti-heroine Selina Kyle, also known as Catwoman, who shares the big screen with the protagonist, but goes far beyond a mere supporting role.

A more deep look into Catwoman’s identity

From the beginning of the film, the difference between the current character and the other versions is noticeable. Matt Reeves emphasizes the psychological aspect of Catwoman’s personality, by showing how it was built. She was abandoned, raised alone, acquired certain skills to survive, and promised herself never to need anyone for anything again. Thus, the independence of the strong woman is originated in her traumas, which reinforced her autonomy and empowerment from a very young age.

She gives her character a powerful sensuality when she is older, one of Catwoman’s trademarks, and becomes one of the strong suits throughout the film. Viewers were allowed to really get to know Selina, understand where she comes from and why she is the way she is.

Zoë is the second black Catwoman, and the first bisexual character of the DC Comics Batman film network, bringing with her a major role representing race, gender, and sexuality.  While Batman shows a strong type of power, Catwoman serves a feminine type of power as well, being slightly more complicated and smooth. For this reason, it is easy to understand the resemblance with felines, given their strong independent personality, which is exactly what the anti-heroine represents.
