Finally one of the best times of the year comes again : the spooky season.

It’s time to be creative with scary costumes (or just put your own costume and no judge all others, like Regina George said), study about the history of Halloween, walk around the neighborhood searching for trick-or-treating or just watch a good movie at home – for people who like home programs – or at the cinema, for people who like to feel that fear stronger.

So, now, there are some movies that you could watch to have the scariest night of horror.

Smile (2022)

Such a pretty name for a horror movie, right? But it is not pretty at all! This new movie from Paramount is a psychological terror that promises to mess with our minds.

After going through a traumatic episode at work involving a patient, Doctor Rose Cotter started to live scary experiences that she couldn’t understand. At some point, she needs to face her past to free herself from the horrors of the present.

According to the analysis of the Brazilian critic Waldemar Dalenogare, ‘Smile’ was very well produced technically by extolling the movement of cameras, for example. However, he believes that the ending was not the best.

The plot seeks to highlight the entire event generated by the protagonist’s trauma, therefore, according to the critic, some aspects were missing to make it clear. Despite this, turning a smile, in this case, as a synonym of curse, is what really frightens us, thus bringing a special sense to the film.

This movie is available at the cinema.

Midsommar (2019)

Different from what we are used to, “Midsommar” is a horror that occurs during the day. However, this is not a reason to think that the film can be boring, since the main actress, Florence Pugh, leaves us amazed with all her performance during the plot that happens most of the day.

The script is about Dani who, after living an unhappy episode in her personal life, decides to go to Sweden with her boyfriend and a group of friends to participate in a summer festival. But this festival is totally different from what they expected.

Even though it was released 3 years ago, the movie is very talked about on TikTok and has a lot of positive comments.

It’s available on Globoplay, Claro Video, Microsoft Store, Amazon Video, Google Play Movies, Apple iTunes, Google Play Movies, Microsoft Store and Apple iTunes.

The Black Phone (2022)

At the age of 13, Finney Shaw was kidnapped by a sadistic masked killer, who kept him in a soundproof basement. Finney comes across a disconnected phone on the wall and starts ringing, giving him the possibility of talking to the criminal’s previous victims.

By the criticism of entertainment sites, the movie had a median rating. According to Peter Bradshaw, from The Guardian, “this is watchable entertainment that achieves a reasonable altitude with its jump-scares, and whose suspense-thriller aspect keeps it engaging on a human level.”

This movie is based on the tale “The black phone”, by Joe Hill, originally published in 2007. It’s a film that holds us from beginning to the end, raising the question: Will the victim make it out of that house alive or not?

It’s available on Google Play and Amazon Prime.

X (2022)

A group decides to go to a house in Texas to make an adult movie. At the moment the house owners see one of the scenes, worries begin.

This movie is the slasher genre that we are used to: a group of friends going where they shouldn’t. Even though, is generating positive comments on TikTok and around the internet like a totally heavy horror movie.

‘X’ has a chapter “Pearl”, that tells us the life of the resident of the house and turns the history so much better. In addition to the really glorified acting of Mia Goth, her character is one of the most popular costumes at Halloween parties at this moment, based on a blue eyeshadow and freckles across her face – and lots of blood, of course.

It’s available on the internet.

Hereditary (2018)

Charlie, after her grandma’s death, started an intense connection to what she could have left, and her family noticed it. This attitude terrified her parents and her brother. That is when strange events began to happen in the house, showing the fate of each one of them.

This movie makes us feel uncomfortable for a long period. A lot of scenes are really, really creepy and keep us unresponsive and totally inert.

In an interview with ScreenSlam, that brought together the filmmaker Ari Aster, and the actors Milly Shapiro and Alex Wolff, a lot of information is given about the personal preparation from each one of them before the recordings and a little more of the characters they play.

The public was really choked with Peter’s life. They could feel all the fear and anguish of the character during the plot. The whole cast was very well praised, but the performance of Alex Wolff was much more than that, something to note in the comments of this interview.

If you’re looking for a film that makes you fear a child and that makes you question about the possible communication with the deaths, Hereditary will give it to you.

It’s available on HBO Max and Amazon Prime.

In the last years, the cinema invested a lot in psychological movies that were developed, many times, as a consequence of the characters’ traumas. This fact brings the viewer closer to fiction and keeps the terror alive.
