International Artist Day: 4 Artists That Celebrate Diversity You Need To Know

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Casper Libero chapter.

International Artist Day is on October 25th. The date celebrates all the professionals who dedicate their lives to art, as well as their contributions to society as a whole, with their works and productions.

Art is very diverse, it can manifest itself through paintings, drawings, music, dances, cinema and theater, for example. Through these artistic manifestations, artists expose their thoughts, fears, ambitions and different realities.

Art, born from the diversity of people and cultures, should be concerned with addressing this theme, valuing and celebrating it. For this reason, we have brought some artists, who aim to bring this theme to their productions, that you should know.

Viola Davis

Actress Viola Davis is extremely engaged in social themes, such as the black movement and feminism. She was the first black actress to win an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. She was also the only black actress to win an Oscar and a Tony award. Thus being the 23rd actress in history to complete the Triple Crown of Acting.

Davis uses her space and prestige to discuss themes that society is used to ignoring, calling for more women of color to occupy spaces previously filled, mostly, by white men. In her latest work, she brought to the screen urgent themes that need to be debated, such as racism in the film The Help (2011), which shows that she really cares about the work she is producing and bringing to society.

Karol Conka

Karol Conka is a Brazilian rapper, singer, songwriter, producer, presenter and actress. In her productions and compositions, she has always sought to empower and give voice especially to black women, addressing feminist themes that aim at gender equity.

Occupying places that were previously mostly male, the rapper wants to bring the perspective of a woman to music. A symbol of a new generation of Brazilian music, Karol Conka has revolutionized rap, addressing issues that increasingly seek the inclusion and representation of excluded and marginalized people in society.

Laerte

Laerte is a Brazilian transgender cartoonist. At 69 years old, she addresses political and current issues in her comic strips, as a way to illustrate the reality for those who read them. She also values diversity and the inclusion of LGBTQ+ people in artistic productions, in addition to valuing the art produced in the peripheries.

Being one of the most important personalities in this industry in Brazil, she is also very influential in the media, her words and opinions echo in a way that helps society to walk towards an evolution and acceptance of differences, because she always brings this theme to the surface.

Emma Watson

Emma Watson is one of the world’s most famous actresses, having gained international recognition as a child when she played Hermione in the Harry Potter film series. More than her art, she also has to offer the world her diverse and plural opinions, which aim at inclusion and fighting prejudice, especially regarding gender.

Her activism became known after the famous speech at the United Nations in 2014, when she discussed sexism based on personal experiences, the importance of men supporting the feminist movement and the urgency to act now to change the world, because there is no more time to wait. Since then, she has also appeared publicly rebutting transphobic speeches and supporting environmental causes.
