How “Enola Holmes” is a Strong Story About Empowerment & Compassion

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Casper Libero chapter.

“Now where to begin?”

Enola Holmes is a movie about Sherlock Holmes’ sister’s Enola, and her pursuit of their mother, who ran away for a reason that she doesn’t know. Although there was an unexpected encounter that changed a little bit her way.

Right at the beginning of the story we can see how powerful, empowered and different of the other girls she is, because of the way that Enola’s mother educated her, showing that she can be whatever she wants, even when people disagree.

“I was taught to watch and listen. I was taught to fight. This is what my mother made for me” – Enola Holmes

Enola is intelligent, shrewd, creative and with a big heart. There were moments that she contradicted some lessons learned with her mother, because she thinks that it is important to help other people even if she needs to put her life at risk. From her perspective she needs to support someone who isn’t as strong as she.

One of the most striking parts of the movie is the way that they approach feminism. Eudoria Holmes, Enola’s mother is an activist in a world that repudiates this kind of attitude and thinking, so she spent sixteen years of her life only taking care of her daughter, seeking out to transform her into a future woman, with advanced thoughts. When this goal was completely she ran away to be the woman that she was born to be: a feminist that will fight to change the world for her daughter and all the other women.

A nice message

The whole movie Enola surprises with her skills, and you know what? Sometimes her investigation is better than Sherlock’s. It’s a film that opens everybody’s eyes and shows the weight of being a woman fighting for an equal society.

You finished the movie with the thinking “What can I do to transform the world in a better place?”.
