How Can I Help? Ways To Help Others During The Covid-19 Pandemic

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Casper Libero chapter.

During quarantine, many of us tend to feel powerless, as if there’s nothing we can do but to stay home and wait for all of this to end. And it’s okay to feel like this. But know that just by practicing isolation, you’re already doing a lot, by avoiding the spread of the virus and keeping people safe.

And if you want to help in other ways, we gathered some actions you can take in order to help others overcome these difficult times.

Do the grocery shopping for people on the risk group

Covid-19 is a highly contagious disease and there are people who are more vulnerable to the virus, such as elders and individuals with chronic diseases, so they should stay home as much as possible. In face of that, you can volunteer yourself to go to the grocery store, so they don’t need to leave home and be exposed to the virus.

Ask them to send you a list of the items they need and give you the money to make the purchase — and it can all be done online, to avoid physical contact. After the shopping, sanitize the items you’ve bought and leave the bags by their door.

Support local businesses

Small businesses are struggling to survive and doing whatever they can to stay active during quarantine, even with their doors closed. Many of them have adopted e-commerce methods, selling their products via WhatsApp, Instagram and delivery apps.

So, before you buy anything from big companies, stop for a moment and think of a local store that sells the same product. I’m sure the quality will be just as good and you’ll also be helping someone for whom the money will make a difference.

And don’t forget to tip! Deliverers have been essential to the establishments that are functioning during quarantine. They are working hard, taking risks and deserve all the support and respect.

Make masks

Whenever you need to go outside, it’s very important to wear a mask, in order to control the dissemination of the coronavirus. Because of that, there are many people sewing their own masks using fabric and elastic.

You can also make your own! There are countless YouTube tutorials on how to make them and you can even turn it into a new quarantine hobby.

And why don’t you help other people by producing and giving away this valuable item? You can distribute masks at your neighbourhood or at communities with lower income — always being aware of hygiene measures.

Have tutoring sessions

There are many students around the country having trouble with distance learning. Lack of access to equipment to keep up with the online classes, difficulty with learning the subject, absence of a decent space for study. This new model of education is challenging, and this scenario becomes even more complicated with the decision of the Ministry of Education to keep the dates of this year’s ENEM.

Take some of your time to have online tutoring sessions and help other people study. Have their questions cleared up, explain the main contents and guarantee they’re understanding the subject.

Reach out to a friend

Send a message to a friend, have a video call, play something online together. We’re all going through the same thing, and it’s very important to keep in touch with our friends. Now, that our only way of contact is through technology, a message from a friend can make a huge difference on their day.

Donate

If you can, donate to NGOs, charity institutions and foundations that are working every day to fight against the coronavirus and assist people in vulnerable situations.

It doesn’t have to be money. Help however you can, with clothes, food and personal hygiene products, for example. Another way you can cooperate is by donating blood, since hospitals have been seeing their supplies decrease ever since the pandemic started.

During this quarantine, remember: stay home, wash your hands, wear a mask and help others <3
