Great Mood: The Emmy Nominated Comedy TV Shows Lead By Women

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Casper Libero chapter.

It’s September again and if you’re into TV Shows, you must know that this Sunday is the ceremony of the Emmy Awards. And the previous Sunday was the creative categories or the shows that weren’t premiered for the prime time eye. But the most important thing to notice is that, in 71 years of the award, a bunch of things have changed – the style, the place and, for the most remarkable one, the participants.

And this year, we got some really interesting things, such as the comedy section, for example, 5 of 7 TV show’s that are in competition for the trophy are lead by women – and also 3 of them are produced, directed or written by women. And not only for that, but there’s some other shows in other categories also lead by women, like the amazing “Killing Eve”. Showing once and for all that women can be funny, smart and everything.

For this particular reason, Her Campus will show why you have to binge watch and support these shows. Tune in!

Fleabag

You might not know those girls by name, but I’m sure you’ve watched something with Phoebe Waller Bridge in the credits. This amazing writer/director/producer has a bunch of new projects on her way (I MEAN… 007, baby!), but this year, her name is on top of the headlines because of her masterpiece: the second season of the brilliant Fleabag, for Amazon Prime Video.

On its second year, the series that traveled a lot between genres without losing the fun part, still remains with the best of her intelligent thoughts and her outrageous sense of humor. For those who don’t know, this series basically follows the life of a woman in her late twenties/early thirties trying to figure out her life, while being a troublemaker (like everyone).

Her incredible way to break the fourth wall and get into our minds is impressive and shows how much we have to talk about and support her work. I mean, you have my word that you’re going to like it, but if you don’t, I assure you great laughs about problems – that in some kind of scale – happen to everybody.

Russian Doll

When Natasha Lyone shows up in big banners of Netflix without being related to Orange is the New Black, everyone was intrigued. With a beautiful curly red hair and a really great teaser, Russian Doll made our very own Nicky Nichols debut for a second time in the platform.

In her own TV show (yes: created/written/produced) she revealed one of best premieres of this year. I wish we could talk more about the show without a spoiler alert, so all I can say is: imagine you’re in a birthday that can end in million kinds of ways – and (you did not hear this from us) maybe… time travel?

I guess this is enough connected to a perfect irony that builds up to this SO amazing persona of her. If you like real life at its rough with a twist from the above: that is the show for you.

VEEP

Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Elaine from Seinfeld. I’m not sure if you’re familiar with the name, but believe me: if you’re not, stop everything that you’re doing and go watch something about her. We can’t just stop here because she literally closes the game of being THE ULTIMATE GIRL BOSS.

Maybe I’m exaggerating (I swear I’m not), but if we’re talking about major TV shows lead by women, we can’t go away without talking about HBO’s Veep. AKA the show that won EVERY SINGLE YEAR of its existence, and for the last time (grab your tissues) will be competing against the newly ones.

Veep pursues the life of Selina Meyer – a candidate on her way to White House in the funniest circumstances that this path could have. And after a year of hiatus because of our protagonist fight against cancer, we got her back to finish this masterpiece in the best way possible.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

Last year, without knowing what to expect, Amy Sherman Palladino (the mind behind Gilmore Girls) blessed our world with this amazing show that is this original Amazon Prime Video show. After breaking our hearts for several times in the last season of Gilmore Girls in 2017, this show might found a way to put our best Lorelais’ smiles on our faces.

Midge Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) is an ordinary Jewish West Village girl who might think to have all figured out after marrying Joel (Michael Zegan). But a plot twist happens and everything she would believe that’s physically firmed is not as it seems anymore. And, for some reason, we start to follows the life of a – now – comedian women trough a time that was even harder than today for women to work.

In this path, we found love, friendship, beautiful photographs and, more than anything, great laughs. Her journey will make us think about everything and laugh even on the bad times. I’m not sure if this year they’ll take an award  home (last year they won 6 times) but I’m pretty sure they won’t be leaving empty handed.

The Good Place

Last, but not least, The Good Place is back in the game for its final season. This show whose amazing twists lead us to the most unbelievable ways. Kristen Bell and her team will be missed a lot by this great fandom that the series created in such a short time. And maybe it’s rewarded for the great laughs that gave us along the way.

NBC’s last season is full of surprises, and still manages to make us fall in love with this TV show. The plot isn’t much simpler than actually is: four people found their self’s in the Good Place after died of multiple reasons. Well, the eternal life stays the same? Hell no.

But we found some philosophy understatements, big parties secrets and how relationships work in different ways for each person. And yeah, there’s crying… Both of sadness and from laughing so hard. But I’m pretty sure that you find something to relate with these multiple side stories.
