Game of Thrones Hiatus and How to Deal with It

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Casper Libero chapter.

So, Game of Thrones seventh season’s last episode has been released lately and for those who followed it religiously every Sunday, waiting for the eighth season – that will be released only in more than 500 days – will be a slow death. For those who don’t even know what GoT is about, this is the time to catch up. In the name of the sad GoT fans, we’ve created a list of eight series that can fill, even if just for a little bit, the void that Game of Thrones left in each of our hearts.

1 – Lúcifer

Regarding supernatural series, the Winchester’s series is the most popular. Apart from those that save people and hunt creatures, for the family business, Fox’s new show is gaining its space between supernatural fans. Lúcifer Morningstar, God’s fallen son, gets bored from the underworld and comes to our world on vacation. During his stay in Los Angeles, the Devil itself begins to get involved in several police cases… but not the way you’re thinking.

Why should I watch it? it’s different than every other demon that you’ll ever see – and Lúcifer will get in your heart and make you fall for him with his little angel’s face.

How many seasons released: two

How many seasons on Netflix: Season one – thirteen episodes (available for download)

2 – Once Upon a Time

Just like Lúcifer, Once Upon a Time is a fictional show, where our beloved fairy tales come to real life. In the series, all characters of the well known Grimm’s tales come to our world because of a curse. All of them, now as normal people, don’t remember their past as royalty or villains and keep their lives as if it has always been that way.

Why should I watch it? The show is a completely unique way to know our favorite characters and to leave that ordinary way that is shown by the animations.

How many seasons released: six

How many seasons on Netflix: all of them

3 – Bones

Another Fox series, Bones is old but still gold. It started in 2005 and ended in March -this year. The forensic antropologist team of the Jeffersonian institute, guided by Temperance “Bones” Brennan – the best in what she does – solves several murders in Washington. With FBI helping them, the number of murderers they find is incredible.

Why should I watch it?  Even if the cases and the way they solve it are fictional, there is something amazing in their methodology that keeps your attention for the whole episode, while you get to know them better in their personal lives.

How many seasons released: twelve

How many seasons on Netflix: it was – sadly – removed in August

4 – Dexter

Dexter, a forensic technician, is the best in solving murders by studying the blood that is found in the crime scenes – unlike Bones, which studies (incredibly) bones. Solving the murders in Miami with the FBI, Dexter also has a second and secret life. He, in politically correct words, makes justice with his own hands.

Why should I watch it? The cold blooded Dexter, by doing what he needs to do, show us how “ordinary” people can also be psychopaths in their secret lives, when hidden between four walls.

How many seasons released: eight

How many seasons on Netflix: it was also removed

5 – The Fosters

If you ever thought about how you don’t fit into your family, The Fosters is the show for you. Not that it will teach you how to run away from your parents’ house or something. But the Fosters family will show you that family is not about blood. Stef and Lena Fosters are a lesbian couple that adopted two children to live with them and Stef’s – blood – son, Brandon. Those two adopted kids, Jesus and Mariana, are just the beginning of a new modern family, that will do everything to keep their values and trust, once the protagonist, Callie, and her – blood – brother, Jude, arrive.

Why should I watch it? We can say that you only understand love when you see The Fosters. Trust me, you cannot go through the whole show without falling apart at least once. (and Jake T. Austin is in it as Jesus).

How many seasons released: five

How many seasons on Netflix: only 3 seasons

6 – How to Get Away with Murder

When thinking about law, breaking it is not actually the first thing that comes to your mind. But for Annalise Keating, a criminal defense lawyer – one of the best – and teacher in a law school, finding ways to break the rules is just another day. As being a teacher in Philadelphia, Annalise chose five of her best students to work with her and her crew. As the story goes, teacher and students get involved in a sequence of murders that seem to never end.

Why should I watch it? Seeing the law through another point of view can teach you that seeking justice is not only about what you want: there is always a second, maybe third or fourth side of the same story.

How many seasons released: three

How many seasons on Netflix: all of them

7 – Please like me

After Josh’s girlfriend broke up with him at their favorite ice cream shop, he invites an insecure stranger to his house – where he lives with his best friend, Tom. The stranger, who happens to be Tom’s coworker, Geoffrey, is an assumed gay, who is not ashamed to scream it out loud. At night Josh invites Geoffrey – the same day he broke up  –  and they end up sleeping together. Josh also finds out he’s also gay. And as if it’s not enough, yet in the same day, Josh finds out his mother is in the hospital and needs him to take care of her.

Why should I watch it?  Some people would say it’s a melancholic comedy, something you watch to think about life. But, even if it’s depressing and stuff, it’s still a comedy, with a beautiful footage and amazing colors. And it’s a short series, only 32 episodes were released so far.

How many seasons released: four

How many seasons on Netflix: all of them

8 – The crown

If you believe history is just another school subject that you need to learn very often, The crown needs to be in your series wish list. The show has a dramatic plot and it tells the story of Queen Elizabeth II, not only in political terms, but it also shows her rivalries and relationships. The Crown is not only about how a powerful woman who became even more powerful, but also about the British history.

Why should I watch it? it shows us that history is not just something you learn inside a classroom, it can also be really entertaining.

How many seasons released: only one

How many seasons on Netflix: the only one – ten episodes (available for download)
