Can You Find Love Through a Screen? Dating Apps

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Casper Libero chapter.

Online dating apps can help you find the love of your life or, at least, they can guarantee to make you laugh

As a famous band once said: love is all you need. And, as love is all you need in this crazy world, what about meeting people that have everything to do with you… through an app? Tinder, Popping, Happn… There are so many apps that can provide you an amazing date (or an amazing experience).

Back in the day when smartphones didn’t exist, couples used to meet through online chats, that used to be famous in Brazil. That’s Aninha Dragonetti’s parents story. Simone, Aninha’s mother, divorced after 20 years of marriage and started to feel pretty lonely. She decided to use online chats to have some fun and distract herself. Then she met a man. He had just divorced too, and soon they started chatting a lot. They understood and helped each other through two months. On January, he disappeared. Simone, who’s nickname was Mony, kept searching for him, but he wasn’t anywhere. On February he came back, told her his computer had broken, and wanted to go out with her, meet her in person. That’s when everything started. Today, they have been together for 12 years, and they couldn’t be happier. “He’s the most gentle, kind and romantic man I’ve ever met. We have everything in common, we would even see the same doctors before we met!”.

Talking about stories that had a happy ending, Gabriela Salinas, sophomore in Radio, TV and Internet, met her boyfriend through Tinder! She was travelling, using the app and found him. When they started chatting, she was kind of upset about the idea of never meeting him, as she lived in São Paulo and thought he lived at the beach… But she was wrong. He was travelling just as she was! They decided to go out and things just happened. At first they didn’t get together, as she wasn’t into it because of her last relationship. But afterwards, things went fine and today they’re celebrating 1 year and 7 months together.

Isabella Ferrara, graduated in advertising, went through the same thing. She met her boyfriend because of Tinder. Her friends used to grab her cellphone and “like” all the guys that appeared on the screen. One of the boys – Isabella’s boyfriend – started chatting with her, and soon they started dating! Today, they’ve been together for 1 year and a half.

Laura Magalhães Barbosa, also graduated in advertising, has a friend who’s swiss, came to Brazil, met a boy through an app and started dating. She had to go back to Switzerland and the boy? He went there to see her and they got married! For Laura “that’s the most beautiful love story she’s ever heard”.

But what about the funny stories? Renata Ver has an interesting one. Senior in Radio, TV and Internet, she once met a guy using one of the apps mentioned and they went on a date. She said that the guy was incredibly handsome on pics, but even more in person. They went on a few dates and just as things started to work out and heat up… He moved to Thailand. A couple years later, as she was walking through São Paulo, she saw him… on outdoors! He was back to Brazil, working as a model for some famous clothes brands. They never talked again, but Renata tells this story laughing and, according to her “happy to know that the most beautiful guy she’s ever met came from Tinder”.

Ayumi Fumayama, junior in journalism, has an interesting story too. After the end of a relationship, she decided to try Tinder. She said to herself that she wouldn’t go out with anyone, she just decided to meet some new people. She started chatting with one guy, gave him her number, but soon he asked her out and she ignored him, as she didn’t want to. As she was travelling with her family, she met a guy at the hotel lobby, but as the same thing happened with the guy on Tinder, she wasn’t interested at all. Even though, she gave him her number too, and they started chatting through Snapchat. Half a year later, she went to a Cásper Líbero party, and a friend of hers introduced her this other guy… It turns out that he was the same guy from Tinder and, in addition, the same guy from her trip! She took a long time to realise it, but as soon as she did, they starting laughing at the situation and today, they’ve been talking for two years.

Tinder stories can be funny and really romantic too, but we must talk about security. That’s a really important topic when talking about online dating. Ana Oliveira, junior in journalism, once told a story where she met a guy and decided to go out with him. To make sure she would be okay, she always texted her friends with her exact location. After a few dates with the same guy, this story became a funny thing between the two of them, but at the moment, it was a measure that made her feel safer.

The most important thing of it all is to have some fun. If you do find your true love through apps, good! If not, at least there’s a funny story to tell, right? But most of all, we need to remember that we can be happy either way, just living our lives and appreciating little moments. Apps can help us a lot, but there is nothing more valuable than real life.
