“Call Me By Your Name”: A Delicious Dive in The 80’s

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Casper Libero chapter.

Beautiful, sensitive and painfully romantic. These are just some words that I try to use to start describing this incredible film, directed by the italian Luca Guadagnino and inspired by the homonym book written by André Acima. Call Me By Your Name has also a Brazilian producer behind the scenes, Rodrigo Teixeira (also a productor in Frances Ha, 2013). And, altogether, this group doesn’t disappoint us.

That old story about summer love…

The drama stars when the italian Elio (Timothée Chalamet), a 17’s year old teenager, meets the American Oliver (Armie Hammer), 24 year old and Elio’s father trainee. During the 1980’s, they live a lazy summer on north Italy, passing days swimming in rivers, reading poetries, riding bikes, listening to music and eating fresh fruits directly from trees. No internet. You get fascinated about that life, where all days are sunny. In addition, in the middle of all this warm scenery, they fall in love for each other.

Different from other homossexual couples, their problem isn’t exactly the world’s prejudice, but the short time they have until Oliver goes back to his country. That’s great, because as I’ve heard from a homossexual friend, it’s also “a film for gays to feel how it is, when straights watch a romantic movie”. With two specially great scenes (pay attention on the last conversation between Elio and his father, and the credit scene), Call Me By Your Name is a movie to think about the pains, the delights of love and the concept of a good life.

What a time..

I’m a 80’s lover, so that may be partial. However, have you noticed this incredible and nostalgic atmosphere that their in? It’s the 80’s! So get ready to see the most beautiful clothes (you will want to steal all their wardrobe and use the boy’s shorts with all stars – the costume is a class!) and get hypnotized by the soundtracks. Listen carefully to it’s letters: music is also an important character in this film!

“Love My Way” was eternalized in 1982 by The Psychedelic Furs.

Flies // Watch out: you may found spoilers here!

If you’ve watched the entire film, you may have noticed the flies. They are always somewhere, almost unnoticed, in most of the scenes. There are some interpretations for this fact – the director couldn’t just left them there, without a reason. Do you know how long does a fly lives? The average is 28 days. Exactly! As short as Elio and Oliver’s relationship. But it does not necessary has to be terrible. The film has an intense metaphor that contemplates the “Carpe Diem” expression; to live the moment and enjoy it. It’s a slow movie (and some people didn’t like it because of this), but because the director wants us to live all the story, in it’s time.   The lyric and poetic Elio

Nominations

Call Me by Your Name was selected as one of the 10 best movies by National Board of Review and American Film Institute. It also received eight nominations at the Critics’ Choice Awards, including Best Director, Best Actor and Best adapted script, the same categories that it’s competing at the 2018 Oscar.

Armie Hammer, Esther Garrel, Victoire Du Bois, Amira Casara and Timothee Chalamet. Who would you fall in love with in this cast?

And if you haven’t watched it yet… What are you waiting for? Your heart may hurt in many scenes, but I guarantee: this 132 minutes won’t disappoint you in any aspect.

P.S: “Mystery of love” (the second trailer’s music), is playing on repeat!
