BLACKPINK IN YOUR AREA!

If there is a K-Pop group that has been conquering even more space in the music scene this year, this group is BLACKPINK. Formed by Jennie, Jisoo, Lisa and Rosé, the quartet is among one of the pop industry’s favorite names and, as it seems, they are here to stay!

Formed by YG Entertainment, BLACKPINK had its debut in 2016 with the single-album Square One: Whistle and Boombayah. With the goal of creating a group more focused on the world market, YG, which was also responsible for launching names such as PSY, Big Bang and 2NE1, began recruiting teenagers from around the world with the potential to become global stars. And, luckily for us, it was at that moment that BLACKPINK was formed as we know it!

Now, below is a list of details, curiosities and characteristics of the group:

Profile

According to NME, Kim Jennie, known only as Jennie, was the first member to join the girl group training program in 2010. Born in 1996, South Korea, the artist spent part of her childhood and adolescence studying in New Zealand, where she passed the audition test.

South Korean Kim Ji-Soo was recruited for training in 2011 and confirmed as a BLACKPINK member three years later, in 2013. At the age of 25, the singer is known by the artistic name Jisoo and is the oldest member of the group.

In the same year Jisoo was selected, Lisa, whose real name is Lalisa Manoban, also joined the program. Born in Thailand, the youngest member of the group took the test in her home country and moved to South Korea at the age of 14, without even knowing the local language.

Finally, Park Chae-Young, better known as Rosé, was the last member chosen to be a trainee. The New Zealand singer lived in Australia when she passed the test and moved to South Korea in 2012. As in the selection process, Rosé was the last announced member of BLACKPINK.

First-Rate Success

As mentioned before, BLACKPINK‘s debut took place in 2016 with the launch of the single-album Square One: Whistle and Boombayah. The first one had great prominence in South Korea, whereas the international public seemed to like Boombayah more.

First Comeback

Later in 2016, BLACKPINK made their first comeback. With Square Two, the group released singles Playing With Fire and Stay, alongside the acoustic version of their previous album’s track, Whistle.

BLACKPINK focused, in the Square Two era, on live performances, the release of Japanese versions of their songs, and the relationship with the fans, nicknamed Blink – a combination of Black and Pink.

Rise & Worldwide Acknowledgement

From then on, the girls didn’t stop! In 2017, the group released the track As if It’s Your Last and a year later reached the top of the charts with the single Ddu-Du Ddu-Du, from the EP Square Up. The song was so successful that you probably know the choreography!

In the meantime, Jennie launched her first project, called SOLO, and the group confirmed the World Tour Blackpink In Your Area, which included 32 concerts throughout Asia, North America, Europe and Oceania between 2018 and 2019.

Coachella & Collaborations

The success of BLACKPINK has provided collaborations with famous artists on the international scene. In 2017, they featured in Dua Lipa’s song Kiss and Make Up. Two years later, Jennie, Jisoo, Lisa and Rosé became the first female K-Pop group to perform at the famous North American music festival, Coachella.

In 2020, BLACKPINK won over fans once again with Sour Candy, a track included on Lady Gaga’s return album Chromatica. After that, the girls released the single Ice Cream with Selena Gomez, which peaked at 13º place at Billboard Hot 100 and garnered over 79 million views on YouTube within only 24 hours!

2020

It’s safe to say that 2020 has been BLACKPINK’s year and that the girls really came to take over!

Besides all the success with the partnerships, they recently announced that the first album, entitled The Album, which promises many emotions. Released last Friday, on October 2nd, the novelty gathered attention for including, among others, the name of Cardi B in the tracklist. Wow!

A documentary of the group, produced by Netflix, is also set to premiere on October 14th! Called Light Up The Sky, the production will show unpublished moments from behind the scenes of recordings and concert performances, as well as images of the personal routines of members Jennie, Jisoo, Lisa and Rosé. Pretty cool, right?
