#8 Non-American Writers You Need To Start Reading

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Casper Libero chapter.

Upon reading, we dwell on pages to be teleported to different places, seasons and lives. However, lost in translation – and space – are many stories untold, especially if they’re not brought by English and the prominent North-American literature scope. Here, to find and check out, are eight authors from across the globe, beyond idiom, cultural, and spatial barriers.

Sajni Patel

India-born and Texas-raised, Sajni Patel is an up-and-coming Contemporary and Romance author. Debuting with the novel “The Trouble With Hating You” – featured in 2020’s Apple Books’ Top 10 Debuts to Read and Oprah Magazine’s Top Romances to Read -, Patel quickly gained recognition for her strong female characters and realistic portrayal of Indian culture – and love. To be published under her authorship, also, this year is the book of Covid-19 lockdown love stories “Together, Apart”, in collaboration with other Young Adult (YA) authors, set for October 20th.

Alice Kellen

Born in Valencia, Spain, Alice Kellen is a promising – and popular – writer within Spanish literature. With 9 novels published so far, Kellen has conquered her readers through transposition of lifelike stories, characters and their emotions into her pages. Though few of her works have been translated to English, the author is a must-read in the European Romance scene.

Haruki Murakami

The name behind “Norwegian Wood”, “A Wild Sheep Chase” and “Kafka on The Shore” (among other many titles), Haruki Murakami is a critically acclaimed Japanese novelist. His books have been translated into more than 50 languages, spanning from fiction to surrealism to picaresque – all underlined by his distinctive writing style and humorous narrative.

Tomi Adeyemi

Tomi Adeyemi is a Nigerian-American author, best known for her New York Times Best-seller “Children of Blood and Bone”. Belonging to the series Legacy of Orïsha, the book depicts Yoruba mythology through LGBTQ+ and Nigerian representation, alongside heavily political themes of class, race, oppression and privilege. And, of course, the YA fantasy tropes we all know and love.

Vitor Martins

With stories like “Um milhão de final felizes” and “Quinze dias”, Vitor Martins is a Brazilian YA author and illustrator. He published his first novel in 2017, “Quinze Dias”, which brought forth the story between Felipe and Caio, two boys still learning about loving themselves and each other.

His other works also include stunning LGBTQ+, coming-of-age narratives, and his debut book counts on an English version, “Here The Whole Time”, set to be released on November 10th of this year (and acclaimed already by authors such as Rainbow Rowell and Rachel Lippincott!).

Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Silvia Moreno-Garcia, born and raised in Mexico, is a fiction, horror and historical drama novelist. With titles included in The New York Times’ Best Seller List, Moreno-Garcia explores her heritage by including Mexican culture, characters and folklore naturally into her tales. Her latest book, “Mexican Gothic”, released on June 30th of 2020, is the early stages of being adapted into a limited series on Hulu; her upcoming one, “A Dangerous Eagerness”, is set to be released in 2021, depicting a mystery story in Mexico also.

Elif Shafak

A British-Turkish storyteller born in France, Elif Shafak is the pen name of Elif Şafak, the award-winning author of “The Forty Rules of Love” and “The Bastard Of Istanbul”. Writing in both English and Turkish, she has released 17 books so far, with her works being translated into more than 50 languages spanning internationally. Glimpsing into life in the Middle Eastern, Shafak is known and critically acclaimed for her sensible prose that threads politics, history, religion and fiction.

Paulo Coelho

The best selling Brazilian author worldwide, Paulo Coelho is the mind behind staples in contemporary literature, such as “The Alchemist” and “The Pilgrimage”. With books transcribed in 70 other languages and read in over 150 countries, Coelho spans from fiction to romance and philosophy writing, often all within one piece.
