The past six months have not been easy, and we all need something to take our minds off the insanity that is this year of 2020. And one of my favourite ways to relax is watching the incredibly creative forms that award shows have reinvented themselves to still take place during the COVID-19 pandemic. This Thursday (25), was MTV MIAW’s turn to impress us. And let me tell you, they did not disappoint in any way. And here’s 7 moments from the night to prove it!

Starting off with a bang!

The very first great moment of the night was Luisa Sonza’s killer performance of a medley of three of her new songs, including the duet ‘Flores’ (Flowers) with her boyfriend, the singer Vitão, who gave her flowers at the end of the performance – it was so cute!

Ok, but who’s hosting?

The perfect duo, that’s who! Bruna Marquezine and Manu Gavassi were the hosts of this year’s MTV MIAW and even though they stated various times that they were nervous something was going to happen, from the moment they showed up it was clear that these two were the perfect choice. And they started off strong, with a musical number at the beginning that set the tone for the rest of the night: jokes, friendship and social distancing.

Djonga and Black Lives Matter

The rapper delivered an awesome performance of “O Cara de Óculos” (The Guy In Glasses) and “Olho de Tigre” (Eye of a Tiger) heavily inspired by the protests against violence suffered by black people, with the dancers starting on the floor with blood on their chests, then moving up to thrones while wearing T-shirts with the words “parem de nos matar” (“stop killing us”) halfway through the performance. And that ending with “fogo nos racistas” (“burn the racists”) was a really powerful moment just before the camera cuts away from him.

“It’s Britney, b*tch!”

Still on the topic of the hosts, one of my favourite moments between them was when Bruna dressed up as Britney Spears and Manu dressed as the snake from the “I’m a Slave 4 U” performance in the 2001 VMAs (and a special shout out to Bruna for asking if her friend was dressed as the naja from Brasilia, which became a meme). I’m telling you, these women were just the best duo for the job.

A woman’s place is… on a stage making jokes!

The stand up comedian Bruna Louise won the “Ri Alto” (LOL) Award and showed just how much she deserved it by joking about how she was not expecting to win – even saying she got a cake made to congratulate Rafael Portugal for the win – and reminding us all how amazing it is that a woman is taking home an award for comedy when so many people (read: men) say that “women aren’t funny”, and if it’s up to her, they’re not stopping on this first one!

And the ÍCONE MIAW (MIAW ICON) goes to…

MANU GAVASSI! The co-host made me cry *with her* while giving her speech. She read a letter from a 12-year old fan, who she says reminded her that it’s okay to be exactly the way we are and that her fans are “as crazy as she is”. And also surprised her by asking for an autograph instead of a selfie.

The perfect ending for the perfect award show

The final performance of the night was Pabllo Vittar, with “Amor de Que”, the song that won the “Hino do Ano” (Anthem of the Year) award earlier in the evening. Twitter went crazy with her performance and everyone at home was left wishing for more! And is it just me or did Pabllo get some inspiration from Ariana Grande for her look and hairstyle in this performance?
