It’s not news to anyone that Coldplay is one of the biggest bands nowadays. This became even clearer after the band sold out all the tickets for the four concerts they announced in São Paulo in less than twenty minutes each.

So, since time is flying and October is just around the corner, we’ve separated seven of the boys’ most timeless songs to warm up before their arrival in Brazilian lands. Come with us to enjoy and remember these classics!

YELLOW

“Look at the stars, look how they shine for you”. Yeah, we know you read this as if you were singing, right? That’s the power of ‘Yellow’.

The music was the second single from the album ‘Parachutes’, the band’s very first one. Released in 2000, the song was responsible for introducing their aesthetic and sound, making Coldplay one of the most known and loved bands in the world.

According to Chris Martin, Coldplay’s vocalist, they came up with this first line after looking up at the starry sky at Rockfield Studios in rural Wales, the same place where Queen recorded ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ in 1975 and Oasis recorded ’Wonderwall’ twenty years later.

This place is really not messing around when it comes to releasing hits!

CLOCKS

2003 Grammy Record of the Year Award Winner, ‘Clocks’ talks about love and being in a conflicting but very intense relationship as precious time slips away.

A curiosity about the song is that it was almost left out of the band’s second album, ‘A Rush of Blood to the Head’. Since they didn’t have much time because the music was written shortly before the album’s release, the members set it aside and planned to work on it for their next record.

It just didn’t happen because a friend of Martin’s heard the demo and convinced them to do whatever it took to record it on that one. Thanks for that, Chris’ friend!

THE SCIENTIST

Who never wanted to start over and do everything differently?

This song tells the story of a scientist who is so involved in his work that doesn’t give his girlfriend the attention she needs. When he realizes it, he wants to “go back to the start” and try again.

The entire music video is played in reverse to convey this idea of a fresh start. But what draws attention is the fact that Chris Martin learned the lyrics backwards, so when placed in reverse, he appears singing normally.

FIX YOU

‘Fix You’ is one of the band’s most emotional tracks, as it was written for Martin’s ex-wife, the actress Gwyneth Paltrow, after her father passed away.

It all started when the vocalist plugged in the keyboard that belonged to his father-in-law and was inspired by the sound that came out of it.

The lyrics talk about true love and helping someone in their time of need, trying to pick up the pieces and fix it. Very touching, isn’t it?

VIVA LA VIDA

One of the most requested and awaited songs at the shows, ‘Viva la Vida’ is an icon full of references – starting with the title that was inspired by a phrase from a painting by Frida Kahlo.

Unlike what we’re used to hearing in songs of this style, this one approaches themes such as missionaries, revolutionaries and the Bible. Furthermore, it is narrated from the perspective of a king who lost his throne and now analyzes his deeds through the verses.

You can’t help but be interested in this masterpiece!

pARADISE

2011 hit, ‘Paradise’ tells the story of a little girl with dashed hopes of the world. The lyrics may seem harmless, but they lead us to several reflections about expectations, disappointments and how dreams can be escape routes from reality.

The song became even better known after appearing in the trailer for the movie “Life Of Pi”, in addition to having an emblematic music video.

It’s not every day that we see a man dressed as an elephant riding a unicycle, so you won’t regret checking it out!

A SKY FULL OF STARS

And last but definitely not least, ‘A Sky Full Of Stars’ is that song that anyone would like to have dedicated to them. I mean, who doesn’t want a melodic declaration of love to call their own?

Featuring Swedish DJ Avicii in 2014, the song is the band’s first EDM (electronic dance music) track and the second single from their sixth studio album, ‘Ghost Stories’.

To bring to a perfect end, the video shows Chris Martin walking down the street dressed as a one-man band, before joining the rest of Coldplay and their fans.

Now you’re halfway ready to enjoy their time in Brazil and the next step is to listen to the band’s new album, ‘Music Of The Spheres’. Just don’t forget to fasten your seat belts. You are about to join a cosmic journey!
