The Halloween season is defined by its atmosphere and nothing sets the mood like the perfect movie marathon! The cinematic landscape of horror and fantasy offers something for every type of viewer. Here you will find a curated look at five iconic films and franchises that perfectly capture the spirit of this season.
Coraline (2009)
Directed by Henry Selick and based on Neil Gaiman’s 2002 novella, Coraline is a truly acclaimed stop-motion animated film. The story follows an eleven-year-old Coraline Jones, who moves into an old Victorian house and discovers a little door with a tunnel behind it. This passageway leads to an “Other World”, at first glance, a perfect alternative reality where button-eyed doppelgangers of her parents spoil her with delicious food and attention. However, that idealized world shatters when the Other Mother offers to let Coraline stay forever, on the condition that she sew buttons onto her eyes. The Other Mother is eventually revealed to be a terrifying, arachnid creature known as the Beldam.
Coraline perfectly balances whimsical fantasy with raw fear, making it a masterclass in immersive storytelling.
Silent Hill (2006)
A dive into pure supernatural psychological horror, Silent Hill delivers a chilling adaptation of the famous Konami video game series. Directed by Christophe Gans, the 2006 film follows Rose Da Silva, a desperate mother who takes her adopted daughter, Sharon, to the abandoned town of Silent Hill in hopes of curing her unsettling sleepwalking. The town, deserted in the 1970s due to a massive underground coal fire, exists in multiple dimensions. As Rose searches for her missing daughter, the environment violently shifts between a desolated limbo and surrounding darkness (representing Hell). Along the way, she encounters inhuman monsters, including the terrifying and iconic knife-wielding villain, the Red Pyramid, and uncovers the dark history of the town’s fanatical cult.
Hocus Pocus (1993) & Hocus Pocus 2 (2022)
Hocus Pocus is the definitive family-friendly Halloween essential. Directed by Kenny Ortega, the 1993 fantasy comedy stars Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy as a comically villainous trio of witches. The story takes place in Salem, Massachusetts, where a teenage boy accidentally awakens the trio (known as the Sanderson sisters) on Halloween night. Though it initially struggled to find an audience, annual October television broadcasts helped the film find its audience, transforming it into a beloved cult classic!
Nearly three decades later, the magic was revived with Hocus Pocus 2. Released on Disney+ in September 2022 and directed by Anne Fletcher, the sequel brought back Midler, Parker, and Najimy to reprise their iconic roles for a new generation.
Fear Street (Trilogy & Spin-Off)
Based on R. L. Stine’s beloved book series, the Fear Street films, successfully bridges the gap between supernatural terror and classic slasher tropes. Directed by Leigh Janiak, the ambitious Netflix trilogy (Part One: 1994, Part Two: 1978, and Part Three: 1666) was released over three following weeks in July 2021. The central narrative follows a group of teenagers fighting for survival as they attempt to break a deadly, centuries-old curse that has haunted their town of Shadyside. The timeline jumps from a 1990s series of murders to a 1978 summer camp massacre, all the way back to the mid 17th century origins of the curse. The franchise continues to expand with a fourth installment, Fear Street: Prom Queen, directed by Matt Palmer and released in May 2025.
Scream (1996 & The Saga)
Wes Craven’s 1996 film Scream revolutionized the horror landscape by introducing a highly self-aware approach to the slasher genre. Written by Kevin Williamson, the film centers on high school student Sidney Prescott and her friends as they are targeted by a costumed killer known as Ghostface. The brilliance of Scream lies in the playful self-commentary about horror: the characters actively watch horror films and use their knowledge of genre clichés to survive. The opening sequence defied audience expectations immediately with a shocking twist, and became iconic for its tension. The film’s massive critical and commercial success reinvented the slasher genre in the 1990s and gave life to a massive franchise incorporating seven films and an anthology television series.
From the stop-motion nightmares of Coraline to the slashers of Scream, these five titles prove that Halloween has something for everyone! Whether you crave the chilling atmosphere of Silent Hill, the nostalgia of Hocus Pocus or the teen terror of Fear Street, each one explores fear in its own way. Together, they show how the genre can be playful, psychological, comedic or brutal and how a good scare can become a beloved tradition. So, turn down the lights, gather some friends and pick your favorite for this spooky season…
Just remember: in horror movies, it’s never a good idea to say “I’ll be right back.”
