10 Things to Have in Your Closet if You Live in São Paulo

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Casper Libero chapter.

Weather in Sao Paulo is among the best in the world, with pleasant temperatures between 20ºC and 25ºC throughout the year. The winters are still very mild compared to other places and thermometers rarely hit very low, and on the occasion they do, it is big news. It also has relatively mild summers, where the city gets some afternoon showers, which can sometimes flood the streets.

Actually the weather here can be unpredictable during any season but it especially gets crazy during spring and fall.  One weekend it is incredibly hot, everyone brings out their fans and turns the AC on, stripping the blankets from their beds and most of the population can be seen wearing shorts and tank tops. Two days later, paulistas are putting the blankets back on their beds and wearing sweaters and scarves.

Sometimes extreme weather changes can occur even within the same day. Mark Twain once said, “In the spring I have counted one hundred and thirty-six kinds of weather inside of twenty-four hours”, and even though he probably wasn’t talking about Sao Paulo, the quote fits perfectly what you might experience on a typical day on the metropolis. So, how to prepare for it? And most importantly, how to do it in style? To answer both of these questions, here’s a list of 10 of the most important things to have if you’re making your way through hots and colds.

  1. Umbrellas

My personal mantra is: Always carry an umbrella! Those tiny, little brollies no bigger than eight inches long that fit into a small purse are the best type to have. Might seem obvious in a tropical country and some people might be reluctant to consider it a fashion accessory, but whether you prefer a pretty floral print or something a little more playful, we’re certain you’ll find a style that suits you!

  1. A cross-body handbag

A cross-body bag is a must-have because it’s amazingly wearable and comfortable. Useful for hands-free shopping, easy to look for during your daily commute, and practical when carrying your coffee down the street; really, the possibilities are endless. Try to look for one that’s not too small, because you’ll want to have enough space to store a light sweater or cardigan in there without it being too crammed.

  1. A beautiful scarf

Scarves are always an essential in a wardrobe, but lately, they’ve seem to taken off as a trend. It adds a lot to pretty much any outfit, and, if you’re too warm with it on, it’s easy to just throw it in your bag or even unwrap it and let your neck get some air. If you’re looking for a suggestion on what fabric to choose from, cotton will get you through most temperatures and isn’t super expensive.

  1. A comfy pair of shoes on-the-go

Whether you’re headed to the gym or going out for a casual stroll, living in a big city requires that you’re prepared to walk pretty much anytime. Having a pair of understated and somewhat sporty shoes to wear whenever you’re moving around town and not having to worry about your feet hurting is very important. If you’re looking to have a more dressed-up look, opt for a pair of oxfords, otherwise, you’ll probably be alright with a pair of sneakers or sandals during the summertime.

  1. A stylish raincoat

Since it was first introduced back in the 1800s, jeans has become the definition of casual cool, looking as effortless on as they are to wear. That doesn’t mean that everyone likes it, but it’s undeniable that it goes with every style and body. Patterned, cropped, studded or dip-dyed, it can be dressed up or down and can be worn in summer and winter. Some people might argue that it feels a bit restrictive on some bodies, but trying a pair with a high percentage of elastane might change their mind. Nevertheless, if you’re looking for buying just one versatile and stunning piece this season, consider investing in a good denim piece.

  1. Something jeans (shorts, skirt, pants or jackets)

  1. Nice sunglasses

Even more than handbags and hats, sunglasses have become the go-to fashion accessory. When making the fashionable purchase, remember sunglasses protect your eyes. So, how well they work matters just as much as how they make you look. Most of us associate sunglasses with summer, but we still make the mistake of forgetting to wear our favorite shades during the cold winter months.

  1. A pair of ankle boots

Ankle boots can work with everything from a mini skirt to boyfriend jeans, and because most of them have a little bit of height, they add a extra dose of style instantly. When you go for a clean, polished leather pair, they’ll be more likely to work for the office or small party as well as casual weekend plans. Likewise, if you choose an edgier pair, make sure they’re in a color that goes with most of your clothes, such as black or dark brown.

  1. A waterproof watch

In a time of smartphones and computer screens, we still can’t rely entirely on our gadgets’ batteries. Still now, a wrist watch is the most convenient way to tell the time and also, a very cute accessory guaranteed to be as useful as it is stylish. They make it it easier for us to display their sense of style. They are a form of self-expression – they can tell a lot about someone’s mood, personality and style. When you’re just starting your watch wardrobe, you’ll need a classic: a basic wristwatch with a round golden face and a black leather band can go with pretty much anything.

  1. A cute midi dress

A mid-length dress is a must have for any lady. You can wear it for work with a blazer and court shoes, sandals for a night out or a date, pair it with sandals and a denim jacket for the perfect weekend style or just wear it with sneakers to go around your day. Midi dresses offer a lot of elegance without needing a lot of effort and are perfect for summer and winter.
