The 10 Best Christmas Movies for You to Binge-Watch this December

The holidays are approaching, and with them, the Christmas spirit. We look for decorations, begin to think about the Christmas dinner schedule, the clothes we will wear, the gifts we will give, and the sense of the festivity itself. To get in the mood and seek for inspiration, it is normal that to prepare ourselves, we seek to watch the largest of films on this theme.

So, Her Campus has selected the top ten Christmas movies to let you know what to watch!

  1. 1. The Grinch (2000)

    The movie “The Grinch” is inspired by Dr. Seuss's book “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”.  Grinch is a green being who hates Christmas and goes out of his way to destroy it. He creates this aversion by being abused by colleagues because of their peculiar appearance. In one Christmas, he is humiliated in front of everyone except for a girl who was in love, so he takes refuge in a cave with his dog and tries to end the Who's party, stealing gifts and destroying decorations.  The film seeks to show the true meaning in Christmas and friendship.

  2. 2. Home Alone (1990)

    Home Alone is a Christmas comedy starring Macaulay Culkin, who plays Kevin McCallister, an eight-year-old boy who is forgotten at home by his family over Christmas.  Everything already seemed to be running out of control, passing such an important date alone, but the problem intensifies when dealing with two thieves. Kevin seeks clever and funny solutions to end bad guys and spend Christmas in the best way

     The movie was a complete box office hit, being considered one of the best Christmas movies of all time.  There is also a sequel to the original cast: Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.

  3. 3. A Christmas Carol  (2009)

    Christmas Carol is a 3D digital animation from Disney, directed by Robert Zemeckis.  The story revolves around the life of Ebenezer Scrooge - a petty, bitter, cold lord - who has the opportunity to change the fate of his death and become a better person, receiving the ghosts of past, present and future Christmas.  Throughout the plot, Scrooge changes his vision and understands the true spirit of Christmas.

    More than anything, A Christmas Carol is one of the most exciting and strong movies about Christmas.

  4. 4. The Christmas Chronicles (2018)

    The recently released movie tells the story of brothers Kate (Darby Camp) and Teddy Pierce (Judah Lewis) who are catching Santa in action, but it ends up getting involved in a mess and will have to help the good old man save Christmas  . There is an involvement between the elves and the children, forming a beautiful friendship. The Christmas Chronicles is a light, funny and sweet movie and is good for any Christmas lover to watch.

    Recently, Netflix announced the possibility of creating the sequel to the movie.

  5. 5. Daddy’s Home 2  (2017)

    Daddy’s home 2 is a Christmas comedy, continuation of the movie Daddy’s home.  The film tells the story of two men Brad (Will Ferrell) and Dusty (Mark Wahlberg), who share a similarity: they are copal.  Sara is Dusty's ex-wife, and Brad's current wife. After going through turbulent moments in the dispute for their children's attention, the pair of parents form a beautiful friendship and complicity that is put into play with the arrival of grandparents for Christmas: Kurt (Mel Gibson) and Johan (John Lithgow).  The family decides to spend the holidays together in a mountain house, and they go through various quarrels and situations that elicit laughter from viewers, but they overcome everything because of the Christmas spirit.

  6. 6. The Princess Switch  (2018)  

    The princess switch is a romantic comedy set in a Christmas setting starring Vanessa Hudgens, who plays a double role.  The film tells the story of a confectioner and the Duchess of Montenaro who, upon meeting each other, realize that they are identical and decide to switch places during Christmas week.  With charismatic characters, an engaging story and a lot of romance, the film manages to delight those who watch it.

  7. 7.  The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) 

    The animation created by genius Tim Burton of the musical fantasy genre tells the story of Jack Skellington, a resident of Halloween City, a place where Halloween is every day, which opens a portal to Christmas City.

    Halloween City is made up of monsters, ghosts, goblins, vampires, werewolves and witches.  Jack is the king of pumpkins and main attraction of anul halloween. Fed up with repeating the same thing every year, he begins to wander through the woods when he finds a portal to his hometown.  Getting in touch with the Christmas spirit, Jack wants to show what it's like to the residents of his town. His desire to live Christmas is so great that he ends up kidnapping Santa Claus. Getting into a lot of trouble, the pumpkin king tries to save Christmas with his admirer Sally.

    A classic of animations, The nightmare before christmas is for sure one of the best Christmas movies.

  8. 8. The Polar Express  (2004)

    The Polar Express is yet another Christmas-themed digital animation movie.  One boy, Hero (Josh Hutcherson), is incredulous about Santa Claus and wants his belief in the Christmas figure to return.  On Christmas Eve, a black train bound for the North Pole appears in front of his house, whose driver (Tom Hanks) lets him in and board.  Inside the train, he meets two more children who are also on a journey.

    The plot is full of adventures and emotions, showing the public that anyone can regain the Christmas spirit.

  9. 9. The Holiday  (2006)

    The romantic comedy The Holiday stars Kate Winsley, Jack Black, Eli Wallach, Cameron Diaz and Jude Law. It tells the story of two different women who live in totally different places but are tired of the life they are leading.  The two know each other over the internet and decide to change houses during the holiday season. During stays, Iris (Kate Winsley) approaches Amanda's neighbor (Cameron Diaz), who falls in love with her friend's sister.

    Home exchanges brought unexpected experiences, passions, romance, new friendships, new life perspectives and a great learning experience for each.

  10. 10.  The Rooftop Christmas Tree (2016)

    Inspired by a true story, The rooftop christmas tree tells the story of Dale Landis (Tim Reid), a gentleman who every Christmas puts a Christmas tree on the roof of his house without anyone knowing why.  However, the court wants him to remove the tree from its roof and even take him to prison. Then come the figures of lawyer Sarah Wright (Michelle Morgan) and prosecutor (Stephen Huszar) fighting to help Dale.

    At the end of the movie, the reason for using the tree is revealed generating emotion and commotion in viewers, showing the beauty of the Christmas spirit.

  11. 11. Bonus- Mean Girls (2004)

    Mean Girls is not a Christmas themed movie, but it's impossible not to hear Jingle Bell Rock and remember the choreography of Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan), Regina George (Rachel McAdams), Karen Smith (Amanda Seyfried) and Gretchen Wieners (Lacey Chabert).
