What You Need to Know About Cannabis (From a Budtender)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Carleton chapter.

Pot, weed, maybe even Mary Jane: maybe you’ve heard a few of the million ways to refer to cannabis. Ever since cannabis became legal in Canada in 2018, it’s been safer, easier to access, and everywhere. I started working at a dispensary six months ago and I realized I knew absolutely nothing about weed.

If you don’t know your hemp from your hash, here are a few tips I’ve picked up as a budtender!

Ask Questions!

If the thought of a dispensary seems overwhelming, don’t be shy! Budtenders are there to answer any of your worries — plenty of customers are first-timers, so there are no bad questions. There’s an overwhelming amount of information out there about weed. If you want to learn about different strains, how to consume them, or flavour profiles, budtenders are there to help.

Cannabis is Extremely Personal

Highs affect everyone differently — I’ve hated strains that my coworkers rave about and vice versa! While recommendations help, there’s no way to guarantee how cannabis will affect you. There are also a million ways to consume; from infused sodas to bongs, everyone has a preference. Whatever way you like to consume cannabis best, there are always new options to try!

There Are Benefits Beyond the High

If getting high doesn’t interest you, CBD (cannabidiol) is an option! CBD has no psychoactive effects and a range of benefits, including pain relief, sleep and relieving anxiety. CBD is also a great way to avoid smoking since it comes in forms like softgels and oils.

It’s Still a Taboo Subject

Most people laugh when I tell them I work at a dispensary (which is usually followed up with a question about how much I smoke!) I don’t smoke frequently, but it still seems to be more taboo than drinking.

Legalization is still in the early stages, but don’t let that scare you off! Cannabis isn’t one-size-fits-all: I’ve helped out people of all ages at the dispensary. Cannabis has benefits, so do your research and decide what’s right for you.

Whether you’re a regular smoker or you’ve never walked into a dispensary, there’s always more to learn about cannabis! I’ve loved learning more about weed over the past few months and I hope this article offers a bit of help if it all seems overwhelming. Of course, if this didn’t cover it, don’t hesitate to reach out to your friendly local budtenders!
