When you mention Twitter to a non-Twitter user, you get skeptical looks from them. “Why would I want to know what you’re doing all the time?” is the first question. However, for constant users, it can be useful knowing what someone or something has to say. For Carleton students, there are over a hundred Twitter accounts related to the university, providing followers with constant updates on important campus matters.

Although there are many accounts to choose from and follow, I’ve managed to narrow down the list to the top five Twitter accounts every Carleton student should follow.

First up is the official Carleton University Twitter account @Carleton_U. Not only does this account constantly update its followers on the latest Carleton events, services, alerts, and anything else related to the university, it also manages to reply to any questions asked by the account’s 10,000 followers. Now that shows commitment.

Next is the superhero of card swiping, the official Campus Card Twitter account @CU_CampusCard! This handy account is always ready to answer any and all questions its followers have on the Campus Card and also keeps them updated on Campus Card related news. And to top it all off, the account also has free giveaways exclusive to its Twitter followers, and updates on free goodies around campus.

The Carleton University Students’ Association (CUSA) official Twitter account @cusaonline is a must follow for all the association members, a.k.a all CU students. This account provides its followers with updates about and from the many events held by CUSA, and anything else pertinent to Carleton students and Carleton pride. Since CUSA is a student-run organization, the tweets from the account are also all geared towards the students, and how they can be a part of the Carleton community.

If you’re one of those Twitter users who doesn’t like a lot of tweets and retweets from accounts crowding up your timeline, then you should follow the fourth account on my list, the official Carleton Campus Activity Board (CAB) Twitter account @CU_CAB. The Campus Activity Board is responsible for the many events put together by Carleton students, for the students such as movie nights and open mic nights. And the CAB Twitter account is used to update its followers on any events held by the board and upcoming meetings for students to attend and participate in.

“The CAB Twitter account is really useful to follow. If I’m ever bored, I can just look up what’s happening around campus using the account. It also updates me on any cancellations on events,” says first-year student and constant Twitter user Therry Chevalier.

Lastly, the fifth Twitter account that every Carleton University student must follow is a personal account of a campus celebrity, the president and CEO of the Carleton University Students’ Association Alexander Golovko at @alexandrgolovko. Unlike all the other accounts on this list, this account is the personal account of the president, and so in addition to tweeting about the many CUSA events and services, you can also find tweets about other Carleton services, events happening in Ottawa and even what he’s up to.

Regardless of how often you go on Twitter, these five Twitter accounts should be a must for all Carleton U students! Happy following!
