Course selection for Carleton University students is about to get easier, thanks to a new website created by second-year computer science student, Ocean Yu.

RavensRate is a course review platform that allows students and alumni to share their opinions about various classes, such as workload, difficulty or overall experience.

The website includes every available undergraduate course, each of which can be rated out of five stars. Users can also filter courses by program, difficulty level or average rating to make searches and schedule planning more efficient.

The platform is similar to Rate My Professors, which enables students to evaluate various professors, but is designed specifically for courses.

Yu recalled facing numerous challenges when curating his course schedule, noting that platforms such as Reddit or Google were often unreliable due to disorganized information, unclear data or a lack of feedback for many courses.

He sought to resolve this issue by creating a centralized website for course reviews with clear feedback on each class.

These sentiments are shared by students like Gabriel Yorke, a fourth-year Business student and Tik Tok influencer at Carleton University, who said he wishes a platform like RavensRate could have existed throughout his degree.

He equally stressed the unreliability of Reddit pages for course reviews, and noted that the clear organization of RavensRate is particularly helpful.

Yorke affirms that he can see himself adding feedback to the website in the future and emphasizes that he is excited to use the platform.

Overall, RavensRate can significantly help Carleton students create more balanced course schedules, as long as students and alumni continue to leave their reviews.

Yu describes it as a “give and take relationship,” in which each review can help a future student. Moreover, Yu is committed to improving the platform over time, with additional features such as selecting the professor or whether the course was taken online or in-person.

According to the website’s description, RavensRate aims to help students “take your semester with confidence,” a goal that Yu actively seeks to accomplish.

Ultimately, it is innovative students like Ocean Yu who contribute to the continuous improvement of the Carleton community.
