A PSA for One of my Biggest Regrets: Bangs

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Carleton chapter.

Back in 2017, when everyone was getting wispy bangs, I so desperately wanted to hop on the trend. But I held back for quite a long time out of fear that they would not look good. Let’s just say, I wish I would have held onto that fear, because bangs were one of the worst mistakes of my life. Okay, I get it, this statement sounds a little bit over dramatic, but I really wasn’t a good candidate for them and honestly, most people I speak to about them are not either.

When I got my bangs cut at the end of 2017, I had already had many people beg me not to get them. The fact that my hair is naturally curly/frizzy should have been a very big red flag. Further, the fact that I like to workout a lot should have also persuaded me not to get them, as a sweaty forehead equals greasy bangs that stick to your forehead. However, baring all of this I still decided to get them cut, THE DAY BEFORE I LEFT FOR A THREE MONTH TRIP ABROAD. This was literally so dumb of me.

My thought was that I will be overseas, so I won’t see anyone that knows me, and therefore if they looked bad, I could grow them out, away from the country. This thought, although seemingly good in theory, was not a good idea in practice. The reason for this being, for a lot of the time during my travels, I was more focussed on what my bangs looked like when it was hot out and my bangs were getting greasy and frizzy. Therefore I was missing out on appreciating what was around me, and being in the moment.

With all of this being said, a small tiny little part of me is still glad I got them cut. Why? Because I wanted them so badly, I definitely would have eventually gotten them cut one way or another. I needed to see for myself if they were going to look good, I wasn’t going to take anyone else. So I am glad I got them cut when I did, because now they are in my past, and I know I will never get them cut again. To be honest, I cannot imagine trying to navigate the first year of university with unmanageable hair.

Therefore, whenever my friends tell me they want to get bangs cut, I get so intense in the pursuit for them to avoid the terrible decision. I will admit that they do look good under perfect conditions, such as a fresh haircut straight from the salon. But the conditions of day to day life, unfortunately do not permit bangs to look good 95 per cent of the time. If you think the weather causes a bad hair day, try experiencing wind and rain with bangs, (spoiler alert: you’ll look ridiculous).

I’m happy to say that my bangs have fully grown out, and I no longer have to deal with the growing pains of getting rid of them. So please please take this as a psa, and do not get bangs.
