There’s been a lot of online shopping during the pandemic lately, and I’m certainly no exception to that. However, over the last few weeks, I noticed myself taking a liking to supporting small businesses in particular. Their products come with their own unique and quirky charm and you can walk away knowing that you actually made a difference.

Here are some of my favourites:

BB.Basics

This small business is just getting their foot in the door, but in a big way! They are sisters who come from my own hometown and only use pre-loved materials, saving the planet one shirt at a time. They started off small selling home-sewn bandanas, then bandana t-shirts. Now they sell headbands, scrunchies, jean jackets, and re-worked graphic tees. They are a great business to support, but they sell out fast so make sure to pay attention when they drop!

AJ’s Knitted Goods

These two friends are also just starting out, but have created some beautifully knitted scarves, hats, mittens, and socks! A great gift for someone to stay cozy this winter. You can choose from multiple different colours, and they let you pick the style of toque you want as well. Their prices are very reasonable and they also sell complete sets to save you money. I definitely would recommend their stuff; they’re very talented!

Caitlyn’s Boutique

This Ottawa business is very unique and I absolutely love her homemade Starbucks cup. Not only does she have these super cute, customizable, cups but she also sells the cutest hats, scrunchies, and T-shirts. Each of these can be customized to your liking, and make a great gift for a loved one or yourself!

Cards by Natalie

Let’s bring back card giving! I miss giving and receiving cards, and what better way to relive the tradition than sending these beautifully hand-crafted cards! Although the creator has only just launched her Instagram account, she has been making them for years and has genres for babies, weddings, anniversaries, sympathy, thank yous, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Valentine’s Day, New Year’s Day, Christmas, and birthdays! There’s something for everyone from this great business!

Supporting local businesses matters now more than ever, especially because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s never too late to start showing your support and help keep them running — and with these suggestions, you can do it while keeping some cute little trinkets for yourself too!
