Hot and Cold: The Good and the Bad of Winter Accessories

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Carleton chapter.

When the sun starts setting at 4pm, the northern wind blows, and snow begins to fall, you know that it’s that special time of year when we have to bundle up and brave the cold weather. Winter in Canada can be nuts, especially here in Ottawa where there’s already snow sticking on the ground. Surviving winter here means having the right accessories to protect you from the cold, but also the ones to keep you looking hot when the temperature drops.

The Good:

Wool Socks

This one’s simple: wearing cozy socks under your boots can be the equivalent to a glorious foot massage when it’s cold. Grab a pair from Roots or Mark’s Work Warehouse and let’s keep those toes warm, people!

Sunglasses

This one may seem a bit strange, but have any of you been outside on a sunny winter day? That light reflecting off of the snow is blinding, and squinting is not fun. In fact, the reflection of the light can actually have damaging effects on your eyes.

Scarves

Scarves rock. They’re cute, come in many colours, but they also keep your neck warm. This is huge, especially when you have a cold. A side note for guys: girls dig the man scarves. Trust me.

The Bad:

Fingerless Gloves
Sorry guys, but these are just not practical. If you’re going to spend money on a pair of gloves, get one that has full fingers so you don’t get frostbite and have to amputate your fingers off. Okay? Okay.

Uggs

Don’t get me wrong, I like Uggs. They’re comfortable and they keep your feet warm, which is all well and good, but they suck for winter. The second those things get wet from the snow your feet get frozen solid. They retain water like it’s nobody’s business. So, for a winter where there’s snow on the ground, opt for something waterproof.

Moonboots

Now, I say opt for something waterproof, and I mean it, but no. Not Moonboots. Just no.

Winter is not an easy time to style yourself for. If it was up to me, I would leave the house in a space suit and call it a day. However, we have to continue fighting the good fight against this harsh season, both in terms of comfort and style. Warmth should not be sacrificed for style, but style doesn’t necessarily have to be sacrificed for warmth. Let’s make it a happy marriage, shall we? Stay cool, kids. (But actually, stay warm.)
