Halloween Party Do’s and Don’ts

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Carleton chapter.

When the leaves change colours, the Pumpkin Spice Lattes are back at Starbucks, and horror movies take over the theaters, you know Halloween is coming. It’s time to break out the black and orange and shop for the perfect costume. And of course, Halloween also means parties – lots of them. “Halloween is tricky,” says Jenna Odorico, a first -year student,“It’s a little crazier, a little more weird, especially when you throw costumes in the mix.”

But don’t be scared! Here are a few tips to have a good time!

DO dress up!

This seems like it would be the most basic thing to do for a Halloween party, but there are always a few who throw on jeans and a sweater and call it a day. Half of the fun of Halloween is being able to pretend to be something that you’re not. Take some time and put some effort into a sweet costume. “Wear an awesome costume,” says Meg Dabros, a first-year student, “That’s all there is to it.” Do a group costume with your friends or one by yourself; just get your butt into some wacky stuff and prepare for a good time.

DON’T break the bank on a costume!
As much as I love and encourage dressing up, it’s not necessary to spend a small fortune to look great. Some store-bought costumes can cost up to $80. To save some cash, use clothing items you already have, or borrow something from a friend. A little bit of imagination can go a long way with the wardrobe you already have. Or, you can buy a costume used or rent one. Value Village is the perfect place to look for a great costume that’s reasonably priced. Remember: it’s only for one night!

DO get into the spirit!

If there’s pumpkin carving, ghost stories or a viewing of It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, get involved! Dressing up is a great place to start, but don’t be scared to go further. On Halloween, there are no cheesy activities. And if there are no cool parties going on, then organize one! Think of all the fun you had with Halloween activities in elementary school. And come on, we’re all kids at heart!

DON’T wear a costume that’s too obscure!
You don’t want to have to be explaining your costume to everyone all night. If you are picking something that is offbeat, make sure it’s obvious what you are. Otherwise, you may end up with a lot of questions from partygoers and a headache from repeating the same tired response all night.

DO keep it classy!
It’s really apparent to me when shopping for costumes that girls have the option to either show a lot of skin or be a crayon. (Honestly, that was the only one in the store that fully covered the body.) It’s absolutely fine to wear something sexy. By all means, dress as a sassy superhero or a hot cop. Just make sure you’re dressing for you, and not what you think is expected of you.
