Celebrity Break-ups That Broke Our Heart

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Carleton chapter.

Katy Perry and Russell Brand
Katy Perry was always known for her inspiring, catchy pop tunes that believed in fairytales and love stories; her hit “California Dreams” tour spoke evidently of her newly found love with Russell Brand. However, behind all the dancing gingerbread cookies, cotton candies and lollipops, off stage was a complete different story. On December 2011, Russell Brand filed for divorce stating it was due to “irreconcilable differences.” This 28-month relationship had fans believing in true love because Katy and Russell showed that laughter and an open mind is the core to any relationship. Watching Katy sing about happy-go-lucky love songs and then break down off stage was more than enough to break our hearts.

Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner

The country-pop star Taylor Swift is well known for her ability to share her very personal love story through her songs. Around September 2009, she started dating actor Taylor Lautner, but only after a couple of months, it was Taylor Swift that ended the relationship saying that she was less interested in maintaining it. As Taylor Swift came out with her song “Back to December,” which is claimed to be about Lautner, it was clear to the world that Swift was regretful of her choice to dump him. I mean, who wouldn’t be, just look at him! So instead of fans showing sympathy for Swift, they were geared towards Lautner since Swift wrote in the song how sorry she was for giving up on someone who was nothing but amazing to her.

Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling

If anyone has ever seen ‘The Notebook’, then you will know exactly what I mean when I say that Noah and Ally were meant to be. Maybe this was because the actor and actress that played the heart-wrenching characters had an intense chemistry both on stage…and off. The two started dating in 2004, and maintained a relationship for three years. It was one of those relationships that had fans falling in love with them just as the couple was with each other.  After three years of romance, both called it quits and Ryan stated that it was a mutual decision. It was a love story that was so relatable on screen, and so admirable off screen, and it left us without proper closure. I mean, how can that be broken?!

Princess Diana and Prince Charles

The Prince and Princess of Wales got married on July 29, 1981 and had two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. However, their marriage showed evident problems as early 1985. Princess Diana once said, “There were three people in our relationship; it was a little crowded,” and we all knew what that meant. It was publicly announced that Prince Charles was having an affair with his former girlfriend, Camilla Parker Bowles. On August 28, 1996, their divorce was finalized and Princess Diana stated that she wants to be the “Queen of people’s hearts,” and our hearts broke for her as she was in a marriage where she adored and loved him, but he simply let her down.

Sandra Bullock and Jesse James
Actress Sandra Bullock was married to Jesse James, CEO of West Coast Choppers, for seven years. It was a relationship that seemed too good to be true but Sandra viewed his children like her own because well, she was simply in love with him including everything that came with him. However, after seven years of marriage, Jesse’s long-time affair with Michelle “Bombshell” McGee was exposed in the media and Sandra immediately divorced Jesse James. As he was the most disliked guy in Hollywood during this time, Sandra Bullock went on to win an Oscar and even adopting a baby boy. Our hearts broke with Sandra as the news of the cheating scandal surfaced and continued to escalate, especially when she said, “My goal now is to remember every place I’ve been, only do thing I love and not say yes when I don’t mean it.”
