(Attempting to) Decode the Tiktok Lesbian Drama

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Carleton chapter.

We have all seen some interesting or questionable things on TikTok, no doubt. Whether it’s Nyquil chicken, or Yung Gravy dating Addison Rae’s mom, you can always count on TikTok to give us some confusing content. But this particular kind has truly bamboozled me.

For those who are unfamiliar, Lesbian TikTok is when your For You Page heavily features queer women or non-binary people either posting thirst traps, cute couple videos, or educational content. Basically, it is where the WLW (women loving women) community goes to find their newest internet crush. Recently, Lesbian TikTok is looking really different, as it has been plagued with the phenomenon deemed, “The Lesbian TikTok Curse,” where in the span of a few weeks multiple high-profile lesbian couples broke up.

So, a new trend video that has been featured is lesbians (or those keeping up with the drama) trying to explain it to their loved ones using CSI-level charts using photographs and yarn. While many find this hilarious (myself included), it still leaves many questions about what is *actually* going on. But have no fear — I have done way more research than I care to admit in a attempt to educate anyone who cares to know. So without further ado, this is what happened…

THE RECAP

This “curse” started when a couple, influencer Shannon Beveridge and musician Fletcher, sadly broke up. Then, Shannon started dating Becky Missal. Becky is a TikToker who got popular on Lesbian TikTok because a lot of people thought that she was really hot.

Recently, Fletcher released a new album, “Girl of My Dreams.” One of the singles on the album is called “Becky’s So Hot” and is written about Shannon’s girlfriend. According to the couple, they were not asked permission by Fletcher to release the song. However, the song went viral on TikTok.

As if writing a song about your ex’s new girlfriend isn’t wild enough, when the song was released, it seemed like a switch flipped. All of a sudden, a bunch high-profile TikTok lesbian couples started breaking up. Some of these couples include famous college basketball player Sedona Prince and her now ex-girlfriend Rylee, Jojo Siwa and her on-again-off-again girlfriend Kylie Prew, as well as Avery Cyrus and her girlfriend Soph Mosca. There are also other notable breakups, but these caused the biggest waves.

To add to the drama, shortly after Jojo and Avery left their respective relationships, there was speculation of them getting together, which was later confirmed in a TikTok of them kissing at a Chuck E. Cheese. Fans were quick to accuse Avery of cheating, but Avery has denied those rumours, saying that there was no overlap.

Just like most other events that have taken place on TikTok, the controversy surrounding these videos came and went at an alarming pace. While many will probably forget this happened in about a month, we will be left with an online footprint filled with the WLW community sounding off on what does and does not abide by the girl code, and way too many intricate charts.

While most of the gay panic on the topic has calmed down, the whole phenomenon has showed truly how powerful niche corners of TikTok can be. So, now that you are aware of this almost useless information, you can continue your previously scheduled scrolling in order to find the next questionable internet trend.
