5 Steps for a flawless base on the first day of uni

Septembers are getting hotter by the year and it’s proving more and more difficult to maintain a flawless base all day in these dangerously high climates. First days are always important so I’m here to share my routine to make sure my makeup remains intact all day. Before we get started though, remember that proper skincare precedes all these steps and sunscreen is a must in this hot weather.

Skip the foundation

Go straight to concealer. I find that using both leaves my face feeling heavy on a hot day. My routine usually starts with a dot of concealer in the inner corner, a dot of brightening concealer on the mid under-side, and a dot of liquid blush at the high point of my cheekbones on the edge of my eye. Switch out your beauty blender for a concealer brush or a triangle powder puff, both of which I find a lot easier to blend with. This routine will create a wonderful concealer-to-blush gradient on your face.

SETTING SPRAY

You may be thinking ‘Who uses setting spray in the middle of their routine?’ Try it and witness the difference it makes. Reach for your setting spray once you’ve finished blending your concealer and give yourself a generous few sprays. This will ensure that your concealer stays in place and doesn’t feel too cakey.

PRESSED POWDER + LOOSE POWDER COMBO

Again, it might feel a bit unorthodox to use two different types of setting powders but I implore you to trust the process. Before your setting spray is completely dry, take a powder puff into a pressed powder and set your face, pressing the powder into your face as you do. After adding powdered blush over the liquid one you used in the first step, use a loose powder to bake while you work on the rest of your face. My go-to drugstore loose powder is the E.L.F. HD Powder, which is light and airy, perfect for a hot day. You’ll find that using the setting spray beforehand makes this process feel a lot less dry while making it last all day.

lIP STAIN

A lip tint is essential in this routine. It doesn’t sit heavy on your lips and it lasts for hours if you do it right. I use the E.L.F. Glossy Lip Stain and it works like magic but feel free to use whichever lip product you feel suits your face the best. Put on a layer of your lip stain and rub it into your lips for at least ten seconds. Wipe it off and repeat once more. When you’re done, you can add a layer of any lip gloss of your choosing or you can leave it as is.

sETTING SPRAY (AGAIN)

Lastly, we come back to setting spray. It’s always important to use setting spray if you want your makeup to last long while also feeling light and comfortable on your face. Give yourself a few sprays, dry it off, and you’re done!

This tried-and-true method will ensure that your base stays flawless throughout your first day on campus, requiring little to no touch-ups even as the temperature rises. Remember, everyone’s skin is different so if this method doesn’t work for you, there’s no harm in switching it up!
