Every January, I take some time to sit down and create a playlist for the year. Just like a vision board, my yearly playlist acts as the soundtrack of a certain time in my life. I believe it will be so special to look back one day at all the music I used to listen to during my early 20s. What stories do they tell, and how did they relate to the things I was going through?
Here are some songs I think would be amazing to add to your playlists for this year!
1. Love Me Not – Rayvn Lenae
Ravyn Lenae has been one of my favourite alternative R&B artists since 2017. I have been following her journey for a while, and I am delighted to see her gaining popularity on TikTok with the song “Love Me Not.” With its dreamy production, Lenae’s ethereal vocals glide effortlessly over the bassline, creating both a nostalgic and refreshingly modern sonic experience. It’s the kind of track that pulls you in with its lush harmonies and catchy melody.
2. Baile Inolvidable – Bad Bunny
Bad Bunny’s new album “Debi Tirar Mas Fotos” has been on rotation since it dropped in early January. Fortunately, it has been getting me through these cold months. Even if you don’t understand Spanish I think it is the perfect song to get you into the best mood. Bad Bunny makes use of classic salsa music but manages to blend the essence of reggaeton into the track seamlessly. You can’t help but to get up and dance. For me, this song feels like an intimate celebration of love and nostalgia.
3. Keep Looking – Sade
Sade will always be on my yearly playlist. Their sound is timeless and perfect for any mood or emotion. “Keep Looking” is an upbeat and jazzy track that speaks of resilience and positivity. Sade Adu, the lead singer, has the most beautiful and velvety voice that balances the song perfectly. The lyrics encourage moving forward, embracing life’s challenges and staying focused on your goals, which is something I definitely need to hear during this time. Its infectious groove feels like a warm reminder to face the new year with hope and determination. Whether you’re dancing around your room or reflecting on your resolutions, “Keep Looking” sets the tone for a year full of growth, self-belief, and endless possibilities.
4. Need it – KAYTRANADA (feat. Masego)
Kaytranada was my number one artist for 2024 Spotify wrapped. Given that he dropped one of the best albums of 2024, “Timeless,” I think it was accurate. “Need It” is an older song from his album “Bubba” but it remains one of my favourites. It is the perfect song to inject some energy and groove into your 2025 playlist. Kaytranada has a signature blend of funky, bass-driven beats and Masego is known for his smooth and jazzy vocals, which makes for the perfect combination. The song contains electronic, R&B, and funk sounds that ensure you nod your head or move your feet without a second thought. “Need It” is a dynamic and refreshing way to start your year.Â
5. Day By Day – Amaria
“Day by Day” by Amaria will definitely bring calm and intention to your 2025 playlist. With soothing melodies and Amaria’s soft and soulful voice, this track is a gentle reminder you need to slow down and embrace life as it comes. The lyrics speak to taking things one step at a time, making it an ideal song for starting the new year with mindfulness and ease. The instrumental follows a cool blend of R&B and lo-fi vibes to create a laid-back sound.
