The Best Five Christmas Movies

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal U chapter.

There are countless christmas movies that exist that are so enjoyable to watch around this joyous time of year. Whether you’re a fan of the sappy Hallmark christmas movies, or you love the classics such as Miracle on 34th Street, we can all agree that there’s a christmas movie that speaks to everyone. These are the five of what I believe to be the best christmas movies.

The Santa Clause

For the sake of this list, I’m ranking this as the trilogy and not the individual movies. However, I will say that this series of Christmas movies has to be my absolute favorite. Tim Allen is the perfect Santa Clause to ever live, hands down. This series doesn’t even get worse past the first movie, they’re all really great. I’m still holding out hope that Tim Allen will find it in his best interest to persuade Disney for a fourth SC movie. Personally, I think that Santa Clause 2 is seriously the best of this series and it might possibly be the best christmas movie ever made. This movie incorporates some of the best christmas elements- Santa, magic, and love.

How The Grinch Stole Christmas

There’s almost nothing I love more than a Dr. Suess story come to life. The Grinch was always a favorite of mine and I must say that the cartoon has nothing on the movie that came out in 2000 (has is seriously been that long?). The grinch as a character is totally hilarious and completely relatable with his self-loathing and wit. The set for this movie is great, it really brings the story to life in the most perfect way and the script is ridiculously funny. I love to watch this movie when I need a good laugh and want to be put in the christmas spirit.

Elf

Will Ferrell. Need I say more? Well, actually, I probably should. This movie is akin with The Grinch in hilarity. Although, I must say that Elf is even more entertaining than The Grinch to me. Elf is just downright ridiculous in the best way. Will Ferrell was the perfect fit for the role of buddy, who is so relatable in a way that almost doesn’t make sense. He and The Grinch, though on totally opposite ends of the spectrum, are two characters that perfectly embody the two types of people during the holiday season.

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

This is an oldie but a goodie. National Lampoon’s movies are always hilarious. Christmas Vacation is a holiday staple, if you’re not watching it at least once a year you are seriously missing out. Every scene is just absolutely nuts and so unrealistic but that’s why it’s so funny. The Griswolds are no where near the perfect family and that makes the film that much better. They really feel like a real family around the holiday season. This movie and Elf are kind of along the same lines as far as humor and plot go, though I’d say that the Vacation movie takes the out of this world plot line to a whole new level. Does anyone else think that Will Ferrell and Chevy Chase look kind of similar?

Jack Frost

Okay seriously, if you need a good holiday cry, then this is the movie to do it to you. The combination of “Landslide” by Stevie Nicks, an emotional backstory to support the main plot, and some winter fun between son and snowman- I mean father make for an incredible movie. It gets me every single time. It makes me laugh, it makes me cry and it’s a movie I look forward to watching every year around christmas time. It’s a bit more on the sad side of the christmas movie spectrum but it’s really beautiful.
