Top 10 Fierce Women of 2015

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal State LA chapter.

Michelle Obama

As the first African-American First Lady she has done a terrific job at redefining what it means to be a mom, a wife, a professional and a woman of style. This Princeton and Harvard Law graduate might be married to the President of the United States, but she has no trouble telling it like it is. Her recent comments at The Power of an Educated Girl Conference in New York has left all of us girls in a whole different mind set. “There is no boy at this age, that is cute enough or interesting enough to stop you from getting your education.” Well said Mrs. Obama!!

Amy Schumer

Amy Schumer is not just hilarious but also ballsy. After placing 4th in NBC’s Last Comic Standing she moved on to Comedy Central where she now writes and stars in her own comedy sketch Inside Amy Schumer proving she’s not only funny but also fearless. And just a couple weeks ago, her opening to Saturday Night Live made headlines when she put Khloe Kardashian on blast for not been “one of us anymore!”

Serena Williams

What can be said about this extraordinary female? Let the numbers speak for themselves: 69 Single Titles, 22 Doubles Titles, 21 Grand Slams, 6 Wimbledon, 6 US Opens, 6 Australian Opens, 4 Gold Medals, 3 French Opens, and 2 Mixed Doubles. Need I say more?

Taylor Swift

Most of the time we hear about Taylor’s kindness and generosity, her loves, or her breakups, but in her recent single “Bad Blood” we got to see her girl trouble too. And there was no better way to express a terrible fight with your best friend than with a video filled with top notch females dressed in super sexy outfits destroying everything around them, because let’s face it there is nothing worse than having a fight with your bestie.

Anna Kendrick

Most female actresses in Hollywood can sing, that’s just part of being a double threat but can they sing A-C-A-P-E-L-L-A? A-C-A-excuse me? What makes Anna Kendrick fierce is her ability to break through the barriers of what has been a male dominated territory. From now on when you think if acapella you wont think of the frat boys who can harmonize but of Anna Kendrick singing with a red cup!

Malala Yousafzai

Malala has been named “the most famous teenager in the world” and with all due reason. After being shot three times on her way to school, she has become a loud advocate for equal education, especially for girls in her native Pakistan. Time Magazine has listed her in the “100 Most Influential People in the World” three times and in 2014 she became the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for her book I am Malala. Her fight continues as she advocates for equal education rights and as we celebrate Malala day every 12th of July.

Oprah Winfrey

Yes, we all miss Oprah’s Favorite Things show and her Christmas special but let’s face it, all good things must come to an end. Working on her OWN network has given her the opportunity to work on some great projects, including The Butler and the series Master Classes in which Oprah hand picks people who she feels have had a great impact on the world. And so maybe you don’t think she is the “it girl” anymore but within the last few days she has proven to the world that she still has “it”, buying only 10% of Weight Watchers Stock their stock market value nearly doubled. That is what you call POWER!!

Ellen Degeneres

Who doesn’t love Ellen? She is smart, funny, courageous and generous, very generous. Going into her show’s 13th season and staying strong with her tiny celebrities Sophia and Rosie, “Starbucks Prank” and her “Know or Go” segments she will make you feel better no matter how rough of a day you’ve had. As an avid spokesperson for equal rights and an open lesbian she has paved the way for many more funny women to come.

Sofia Vergara

While her accent might’ve gotten her no call backs in the past, Sofia’s accent today is her biggest asset. Specifically casted as a foreigner to play Gloria in ABC’s hit Modern Family, she is a curvalicious woman who is not afraid to show off her virtues and show off her chocolate love on Instagram. She is funny, gorgeous and unafraid to laugh at herself.

Arianna Huffington

This Greek-American syndicated columnist has been able to break all Internet barriers. As the co-founder and editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post she has been able to penetrate all media sources, especially Facebook. With the various branches of the Huffington Post she brings news, blogs, top 10 lists of just about anything you can think of and that makes her one of our fierce women!
