Inspiring Woman Hillary Ramos

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal State LA chapter.

Name: Hillary Ramos

Age: 21

Major: Biology

Year: 4th year

Hometown: Montebello, CA

Relationship status: Single

Describe yourself in three words: Competitive, Smart, and Nurturing.

What does your daily routine look like?

School, work, school, work, pretty much school and work. I also hang out with family when I get a break.

Are you involved on campus?

Yeah. First, Delta Zeta. I’m also in another organization on campus called Hermanos Unidos. That takes up most of my time. When it comes to sports, I also played with Hermanas Unidas. I didn’t know about Hermanas Unidas at first because they were lined up with all the sororities so I thought it was another sorority. When I saw Hermanos Unidos near the Career Center by themselves and I just thought they had a bunch of sports activities to offer because I’m a tomboy so I approached them and they told me girls can join too. I created a bond and family with them.

Name one crazy life experience that happened recently.

My car accident. It wasn’t  dramatic to the point where I had to be hospitalized or anything. Some of my passengers were injured so I got emotional because I felt it was my fault even though it wasn’t. The other car crashed into me. My car accident taught me a lot because of all the stress I’m going through I learned how insurance works, I learned how you’re responsible for your actions even though you’re not the one who committed it. So it really took a toll on me that I wasn’t ready for yet. It made me stronger in the end.

What is your favorite place in L.A.?

The Beach. I like Huntington Beach just because they have the fire pits and a little nightlife scene and shops. It’s a tie between Huntington and Dockweiler Beach because Dockweiler can be a little messy but its 24hrs and you can be there longer.

Who is your role model?

I feel like I don’t have a specific role model. I have more motivation. Most people look up to one person, I want to be that person. I look to the people under me, like nieces and nephews, and I want to be a better person so they have someone they can look up to. I used to look up to my mom and sister but growing up I noticed my characteristics are a little different than my mom or my sister. I have support and motivation. So I try to be my own role model.

What is your favorite food?

That’s a hard question. It depends on my mood. I love Mexican food. My top three is Mexican, Italian, and Chinese.

Describe your dream date.

Its not about where we would go, its about what we would do. I feel like we socialize more when you go eat and talk. But if you’re given the chance to get to know the person because I personally love dates, Its your time to get to know somebody because everyone has a story and everyone is the way they are because of the things that happen to them. And if you don’t know that, you don’t know how to approach that person. If we’re talking and getting to know each other that could be the best date. Being in an environment where you can let go and be yourself and not have to worry about being judged. That’s the way it should be.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I want to see myself in five years being independent. Not having to worry about how things will get paid. Everything I learn from school, I want to take it in and find a good steady job and just find a steady place to call home and make it my own. In five years, I do want to be financially stable. I believe being financially stable brings in a lot of that happiness. I hate to say that but money does play a factor in happiness because its one less thing to worry about. I just want to be happy and stable whether it’s alone, whether it’s a big family, or  whether it’s in a relationship or not.  Just being able to have a home and be independent is what I would want in five years.

What’s your favorite thing about Cal State LA?

What it brings. I know it’s very stressful when there is all these things to worry about but then you get to meet the people on campus. You meet people that are struggling with you and fighting for the same thing and there is this connection. Here at Cal State LA, you find people that are fighting for what they want. You find a good quality of people that are here for what they want to achieve, not because were the top school of sports or something like that.  People are here for the education, not because of the name or popularity of a certain particular thing. This place is for people who know what they want or if they  don’t there are programs here to offer anything to them.

If you were stuck on an island and you had to choose three artists to take with you, who would they be?

If I was stuck on an island and was able to bring three artists, they would be Justin Timberlake, Kanye West (College Dropout Kanye West), and Beyoncé.
