“Beware of Crimson Peak.” These chilling words best describe Crimson Peak as not just your typical thriller movie. Crimson Peak, directed and written by Guillermo Del Toro, is about Edith Cushing (Mia Wasikowska) marrying Sir Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston) and moving into the estate of Thomas and his sister Lucille (Jessica Chastain) after the tragic death of her father. Once Edith moves in, she starts to see ghosts that lead her to investigate the dark secret of Crimson Peak.

Crimson Peak is a gothic romance that has everything of a classic thriller film: a deep dark secret, ghosts, and a touch of romance. From the moment the film starts, suspense begins to creep into from your seat. Crimson Peak has both chilling and comical moments that have you at the edge of your seat.

In the film, romance begins to take center stage when Edith and Thomas first meet. You’re completely floored with how attractive Tom Hiddleston is in 1800s clothing, especially compared to playing Loki in The Avengers. Through out the film you’re probably hoping the couple makes it towards the end. Then you have Lucille, Thomas’ sister, who acts emotionless and cunning from the moment Thomas sets his eyes on Edith. Jessica Chastain portrays Lucille as someone who you should never mess with and has the capability to do anything for the benefit of her and her brother. We can’t forget Dr. Alan McMichael (Charlie Hunnam), Edith’s childhood friend who tries to solve the tragic death of Edith’s father and leads him to investigate further into the lives of the siblings.

You can’t help but be hypnotized with how Del Toro presents the gothic romance, giving us the horrors that lay within the mansion and seeing Edith as the heroine trying to piece together the story within Crimson Peak. When Edith is warned not to go down the basement, you can’t help but wonder what secret lies beneath.

This film is different from any thriller movies that will start coming out this Halloween month. While Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension is a retelling sequel of the series, Crimson Peak gives you unique suspense and a thrilling ghost story that gives us jolts while delivering a comical mirth.
