Dia De Los Muertos Events Near Cal State LA

Dia de los Muertos, also known as Day of the Dead, is a holiday to remember those who have passed away.  People remember their loved ones by setting up altars, which are decorated with pictures, sugar skulls, flowers, primarily marigolds, and objects which those who have passed enjoyed. Thought out Los Angeles, various celebrations are held.  Many of the celebrations are located near Cal State LA, and many are just a train ride away.

  1. Olvera Street

Date: October 25 through November 3

Distance from CSULA:  4.6 miles

Come to Olvera Street and participate in candlelight processions, which will be held from October 25 to November 3, at 7p.m. Before the processions, blessings will be offered. After the processions, sweet bread and champurrado will be provided.  On the weekend October 26-27 and November 2-3, there will be face painting, Aztec dancers, mariachi, art workshops and other activities. Alters will also be set up.

2. Hollywood Forever Cemetery

Date: Saturday, November 1

Time: 12 p.m. – 12a.m.

Location:  6000 Santa Monica Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90038

Distance from CSULA:  9.7 miles 

Find your best Dia de los Muertos outfit and head over to Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Here you can take part in processions, walk among over 100 altars, or see dances by Aztec Dancers.  Come and listen to Grammy Award winning artists, including Carla Morrison. You can also participate in a costume contest for the best dressed Calaca. There will also be a children’s art project area presented by LACMA.  This event is $20 dollars per person. Children 8 and under and seniors 65 and over are free until 4p.m.

Stop by Felicitas and Gonzalo Mendez High School and celebrate the holiday. There will be traditional ceremonial blessings, food vendors as well as art and crafts vendors, face painting, and children workshops. There will also be performances by Las Cafeteras, Raul y Mexia, Metralleta de Oro, The StoneSoul Echoes, !Aparato!, Magali la Voz de Oro.
