5 Things We Look Forward to During Thanksgiving Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal State LA chapter.

Gobble gobble! Thanksgiving is right around the corner and you know what that means! Our four-day weekend is here! It’s that time of the year where all of our troubles fade away as the holidays begin to slowly creep into our lives allowing us to breathe after surviving the past few stressful weeks of midterms. With that, every collegiate looks forward to Thanksgiving break! And below are a few reasons why!

1. At the top of everyone’s list is definitely food! Turkey, mashed potatoes, asparagus all smothered in gravy with cranberry sauce on the side with pumpkin crunch or pumpkin pie for dessert is what’s on the main menu. Every family has their own traditional meal for Thanksgiving Day, but food will always be the main item that brings family and friends together!

2. After the big feast, the next task on the list to look forward to during Thanksgiving weekend is SHOPPING! Everyone wants to know where the discounts are! There are two important days when it comes to spending your money wisely. The first is Black Friday, which lands on November 28th. This is the day when stores offer discounts usually starting at midnight in honor of the next holiday season. The second is Cyber Monday, a couple days later on December 1st. This is for the people who don’t quite want to head out to the mall right after dinner just to be surrounded by mad shoppers to end up purchasing something that you could have online.  In-store or not, shopping is a definite YES when it comes to Thanksgiving break!

Some tips to plan out your shopping itinerary so that you are well prepared for the big day:

-Prepare a list of the exact items you want

-Jot down where you exactly want to go to, in the order of priority. Remember, things usually sell out fast! Go to your favorite place so you won’t be disappointed if you only end up with three items that were on your list after waiting for 5 hours in line.

-Write down the actual non-sale price of the items you are interested in, so when it all comes down to making a difficult decision between two beautiful items, you can go the more cost efficient route and save some money!

3. When it comes to shopping, clothes aren’t the only things we look forward to during this holiday break! All of the air freshener fall scents are a must when it comes to loading your shopping cart with a bunch of holiday goodies! A few scents such as Apple Cinnamon and Pumpkin Spice are most popular among the bunch and never fail to give your guests a warm welcome into your home during the holiday season! It gets everyone in the cheery mood.

4. Be careful not to spend too much of your time inside enjoying those amazing scents! Step outside when you get the chance and take a look at Mother Nature’s beautiful changes in the season itself. This is the time we all look forward to watching the maple leaves change colors as they fall gracefully on the ground. This is the time where we love to take “selfies” as we are surrounded by all kinds of different shades of orange and brown leaves that lay among campus grounds. The weather is perfect as we transition from fall to winter. It’s not too cold to the point where we have to wear a scarf and boots everyday, it’s just right!

5. However, the most important thing we all look forward to during our time off from school is getting to spend our valuable time with family and friends! As we give thanks, it’s always a blessing to be surrounded among people who you love and care about and vice versa. This holiday is especially all about the art of appreciating what you have in your life.  Whether we had a bad week at school, work or just a bad day in general, at the end of the day, we all look forward to spending that quality time with our loved ones and will always be thankful for them.
