Your Complete Guide to Cal Poly Recruitment

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Poly chapter.

Deciding to go through recruitment to join a sorority is one of them most exciting and nerve wrecking decisions of your college career. Whether you’re an incoming freshman or a continuing student, wondering what to say, wear and do are all questions shifting through your mind before you go through the “intimidating” process. Once you’ve decided to give Greek life a try and go through rush, keep these tips in mind!

1. Have an open mind!

You need to have an open mind in order to find your place. This is true or else you won’t find the right organization that is the best fit for you. Don’t get stuck on one house on the first day, because wherever you end up is most likely where you’re meant to be, and where you will meet lots of new people.

2. Present yourself well.

This does not mean that you are going to be judged by what you are wearing necessarily, but it is important to present yourself in a way that you will be proud to be remembered for who you are. Wear something that makes you feel confident, and something that you would want to show off while staying classy and respectable.

3. Be confident.

On that note, while you’re rocking that sundress/romper actually do BE confident about yourself and what makes you who you are. You’re your own person, and there’s going to be a house that appreciates you for who you are and will want you as their sister.

4. Be yourself!

Don’t try to impress people by not being your true self! You’re going to meet the right group of girls who will appreciate you for exactly who you are without pretending to be something you’re not. Do you feel comfortable being who you naturally are with them right now?  Do you see yourself brushing your teeth in your PJ’s with these girls? Who can be your support system for the next four years?

5. Smile!

It seems simple, but keeping a smile on your face will literally make you feel better on the inside, and being friendly goes a long way when it comes to first impressions. It’s hard to smile for hours on end, but keeping your head up and keeping a good attitude makes everyone around you feel instantly warmed at your presence.

6. Have good conversation, and ask thoughtful questions.

Ask questions you want to know the answers to. Be polite when asking these questions, but asking questions make you informed of whether or not you mix well with these girls and whether or not you would be comfortable in their house and with them.

7. Listen to your gut.

Don’t make any decisions based on what other people tell you. Do what YOU want to do and pick the houses that you feel a connection with. Trust the system, because even though it seems mentally and physically exhausting it will work out in the end.

8. Bring an extra pair of shoes/water/snacks for in-between houses.

There’s going to be a lot of walking between houses, make sure that you’re not dehydrating yourself or killing your feet on the trek between them. This way, you can be prepared to be totally yourself meeting the girls, and not grumpy from the hike over or lack of H20 or hunger.

9. Become BFF’s with your Recruitment counselor

She’s done this before. She knows what you’re going through. Your RC is meant to be a support, and don’t be afraid to use her as a resource, because that’s what she’s there for! She will be there for you no matter what you need and will help you with whatever you need in the process of recruitment.

10. Enjoy yourself!

Recruitment is exhausting. But in the end you are going to be glad you did it. You’re going to meet so many new people in your groups and at the houses that even if in the end you do not see yourself exactly where you thought you would be, it’s going to be a worthwhile experience.
Feel prepared? Now you can get ready to embark on one of the most exciting journeys of your college career with incredible young women, no matter what house you end up joining.
