Veronica Mars Lives On

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Poly chapter.

Back in 2004, Kristen Bell, the woman we all know and love as the voice of Anna from Frozen, starred in a little show called Veronica Mars.  In the fictional town of Neptune, California, located between Los Angeles and San Diego, Kristen Bell plays Veronica Mars, your ordinary high school…private eye?  That’s right, Veronica Mars is a private investigator who helps her friends and fellow peers solve crimes and scandals.  Not only is Veronica Mars witty, independent and intelligent, she is also hilariously funny.  She is the underdog you will wish was your best friend by the end of the series.

With 64 episodes, Veronica Mars is the kind of show that will leave you on an endless watching binge as overarching mysteries develop between the seasons.  You will not only become involved in the relationships between the characters, but in the clever and mind-blowing details of the cases.  During the final moments of the series, I guarantee you will be left crying for more. Fans of the series were utterly heartbroken when the show was cancelled in 2007.  More than 10,000 Mars Bars were sent by fans to the network CW in the hopes that the network would renew the series, but at the time all efforts seemed fruitless.  Miraculously, a proper conclusion (or as some hope, a revival) to the series has just hit theaters and video-on-demand, in the form of a full-length movie under the same name, Veronica Mars.

Fans from around the world were so determined to see the town of Neptune live on, that they contributed money out of their own pockets to fund a continuation.  The show’s creator, Rob Thomas, launched a Kickstarter campaign last March that surpassed its goal of $2 million in less than ten hours.  Over 91,000 people donated within the span of a month, raising more than $5.7 million and breaking Kickstarter records.  Almost the entire cast from the series has returned for the movie, which promises to be done in much in the same spirit as the show.  That means no unnecessary Hollywood clichés to boost profits, but instead pure Veronica Mars with every last bit of her usual sharp wit and dry humor.

The movie takes place nine years after the show left off, with Veronica Mars interviewing at a law firm in New York City.  She is called back to her hometown Neptune to aid in a case after one of her ex-boyfriends is accused of murder, even attending her 10-year high school reunion.  Literally, Veronica Mars is the reunion movie eager fans have been dreaming of for seven years.

Though the movie will recap the major plot points from the television series that viewers will need to understand going into it, I would definitely recommend watching all three seasons of Veronica Mars in order to be able to experience the movie to its fullest.  If you do not have the time to watch the entire series, the movie will still be a hilarious and enjoyable experience that will likely convince you to begin watching the series.  To watch the trailer, click below!
