Spring quarter in SLO is arguably the best time of year, with perfect weather and so many spots to explore. If you’re looking to make the most of it, here are 10 must-do activities to check off your Cal Poly bucket list this quarter.

1. Big falls

First on the list is one of my favorite hikes in the SLO area. If you’re looking for an adventure close to SLO, Big Falls in Los Padres National Forest is a hidden gem with two beautiful waterfalls perfect for swimming, cliff jumping and escaping the heat. Make sure you have four-wheel drive if you’re heading out after rain, since the road can be pretty tricky with a few stream crossings.

2. Tri-tip challenge

A must-do for all Cal Poly students before you graduate is the Tri-Tip challenge! To check this off the list, hike up the three peaks in SLO: the Cal Poly ‘P’, Madonna and Bishop’s Peak in one day. Once you’ve completed the challenge, head over to Firestone and reward yourself with a delicious tri-tip sandwich. If you really want to complete this challenge, walk from peak to peak.

3. Camping on Cuesta Ridge

Just a short drive from campus, Cuesta Ridge is the perfect camping spot for a quick camping trip with your friends. Along the fire road, there are many free camping spots with some of the most gorgeous panoramic views in SLO.

4. Big Sur road trip

For those who don’t mind venturing outside of SLO, a couple hours up the coast you can find jagged cliffs and misty redwoods right alongside the rolling waves of the pacific ocean. Every student needs to escape to Big Sur at least once, whether you’re camping under the stars or watching stunning sunsets.

5. Sunset Drive-In

One of my favorite spring activities is going to watch a movie at the Sunset Drive-In. Whether you’re rolling up with friends or planning a cute date night, it’s the perfect laid-back vibe for a night out. Just pull up in your car with some blankets and snacks, and you’re set! You can find showtimes on their website!

6. ATV at the Oceano Dunes

Looking to be a little more adventurous? Grab your friends and head out to the Oceano Dunes, one of the most unique coastal spots in California. Just a short drive from SLO, it’s the only beach in the state where you can ride ATVs and off-road right on the sand.

7. Tidepooling in MDO

Montaña de Oro is a tidepooling paradise, with tons of vibrant marine life right by the shore. As you explore the rugged, scenic coastline, keep an eye out for sea anemones, crabs and  starfish. If you’re lucky, you just might see an octopus or squid hiding among the rocks.

8. Bonfires on Grover Beach

A classic Cal Poly tradition: grab your friends, pack some firewood and head to Grover Beach for a cozy bonfire. Swing by Trader Joe’s for snacks (s’mores are a must), and you’ve got the perfect laid-back night by the ocean, the best way to unwind after a long week of classes.

9. Try Surfing

For anyone living on the Central Coast, trying to surf is a rite of passage. You can rent a board at the Cal Poly rec center and head to Pismo or Morro Bay for the day. Whether you catch some waves or just wipeout, it’s the best way to experience the beaches we have here!

10. As many beach days as possible!

Lastly, take advantage of the warm weather and head to the beach as much as possible! Avila is my go-to as it’s close and perfect for laying out. Even if you’ve only got a couple of hours between classes, throw on a swimsuit and take a quick dip. Trust me, it’s totally worth it.

These 10 activities are perfect for soaking up everything spring in SLO offers. Whether you’re chasing waterfalls, hitting the beach or trying something new, you’ll definitely create some unforgettable memories this quarter!
