The Science and Skepticism Behind Manifestation: Does It Really Work?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Poly chapter.

Manifestation may look like a fun TikTok trend, but if you dive deeper into the history and science behind this phenomenon, you will see that this idea is backed by science and research. When approached with the right mindset and understanding, manifestation might just hold the key to transforming your life in ways you never thought possible.

The science of manifestation is rooted in physics. Everything in our world is made up of energy, which vibrates at different frequencies, and that includes our own bodies. Whatever frequency a person is vibrating at dictates what they attract into their lives – positive attracts positive and negative attracts negative. To attract more positivity into your life, you must raise the vibration of your energy to match the vibration of what you want to attract. There are many simple ways to do this such as eating healthy, moving your body, and listening to upbeat music. Your thoughts are a direct reflection of your reality, and rewiring your brain is hard but it is nowhere near impossible.

There are so many myths and false information regarding manifestation. On social media, manifestation is described as wishing something into existence–people will tell you to write down what you want to manifest three times every day and then it will magically come into existence. That’s not how it works; you can’t just ask for something and expect to be given it. You have to work for what you want, so if you are doing all these methods you see done on TikTok and not getting results, don’t feel discouraged–you are simply manifesting incorrectly. There are countless numbers of reputable speakers and books discussing manifestation, so if after reading this article you want to dig a little deeper into the process and science behind manifestation, I would highly recommend it.

The most talked about law of manifestation is the Law of Attraction. This law suggests that a person will attract what they feel. Positive thoughts bring positive results into a person’s life, while negative thoughts bring negative results into a person’s life. The Law of Attraction is backed by science which has proven that the way a person thinks changes everything. If you want to make a friend but you think you are unlikeable, chances are you will not make that friend. Whereas if you want to make a friend and you think you are a super fun, likable person, you will be more likely to attract a new friend into your life.

The Law of Assumption states that by believing you have that which you desire, you will attract it into your life. While I acknowledge that some may have success stories with this method, I remain skeptical. You can’t walk around believing you are a famous singer and then wake up one morning as a famous singer. You have to work for that reality, and the Law of Assumption places no emphasis on working for your goals. I personally believe that this method can lead to a lot of frustration if someone is not seeing the results they expect.

To be clear, there is no “correct” way to manifest, but there are many strategies you can use to work on your ability to bring your dreams into reality. One technique to successful manifestation was brought up by speaker Mel Robbins in her podcast episode “How to Manifest Anything You Want: 4 Simple Steps Backed by Neuroscience & Olympic Athletes.” In this episode, Mel Robbins’s main point was that you have to not only envision the results you want to accomplish when manifesting, but you have to envision yourself doing the work you need to do in order to achieve your results. For example, if you want to run a marathon, don’t envision yourself crossing the finish line, envision yourself training for this marathon–picture yourself waking up every day at five in the morning to go run your ten miles. You might be exhausted, sore, and unmotivated but picture yourself doing it anyways. Doing this prepares your brain for the work you have to do in order to achieve your goals, making it less daunting when the moment comes.

If done well, manifestation holds so much power and influence over a person’s life. It can be hard to reshape your thinking patterns, but the benefits it holds are endless. Don’t be afraid to dream big. Albert Einstein himself says that “logic will get you from A to Z; imagination will get you everywhere.”
