Unlike our collegiate sisters in colder climes, the lowest temperatures Cal Poly women must face are in the mid-50’s, and the only snow we see is on TV during holiday movie marathons. Fortunately, that means traditional winter-wear like puffer coats, woolen gloves and snow boots are totally unnecessary. Here are the college cold-weather essentials, SLO style.
Parkas like this H&M one are awesome additions to your wardrobe—they’re versatile, easy to layer and keep you cozy without making you look bulky. Wear it with a dress, tights and boots for class, and with jeans, a patterned scarf and cute ballet flats for those late-night VG Cafe runs.
This Fairisle sweater from ASOS will quickly become a staple. Its Nordic pattern screams “cozy night by the fire,” while its white collar adds some sartorial flair. To emphasize the sweater’s preppiness, pair it with skinny pants and knee-high equestrian boots; for a holiday party, wear it with oxfords and a demure A-line skirt in a neutral color.
Speaking of skirts… J. Crew’s glitter mini is the perfect choice for the season. With some ribbed-knit gray tights and ankle booties, it exudes Gossip Girl sophistication; added to causal sneakers and a jean jacket, this skirt becomes downtown-chic.
If you only buy one pair of shoes this winter, choose knee-high leather (or imitation) boots like this Michael Kors pair. Knee-high boots are the sartorial trifecta: comfy, stylish and classy. They go with everything—from dresses, to those Lululemon leggings you finally got for your birthday, to a basic white shirt-and-skinnies combo. Plus, since this pair is two-tone, you’ll never have to worry about matching your blacks to your browns, or vice versa.
Invest in four winter choices, and you’ll be fashionable and toasty all winter long.
