Metro Dining Hacks

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Poly chapter.

Cal Poly students are great at two things: being downright fantastic human beings and complaining about Metro. Since I know #1 will never change, I’m here to help you change #2. Admittedly, I actually loved Metro my freshman year. I knew that Metro was more than its cereal bar, although that too is rather bomb. Hopefully these dining hacks will help spark the love for Metro I know you have…. no matter how deep down that love may be.

1. Cake shake with candles

Ingredients:

–          Fries

–          Milk

–          Lucky Charms

–          Vanilla soft serve

–          Vanilla cupcake

Directions:

1. Grab a cup from the drink station and fill 1/3 way up with milk.

2. Add a large handful of Lucky Charms to the cup. Let it soak for a few minutes.

3. Pump in vanilla soft serve.

4. Add in large chunks of vanilla cupcake (frosting and all).

5. Mix together. Stick fries in and wish yourself a very happy birthday.

2.Beef bourguignon

Ingredients:

–          Thick slices of the roasted round top (beef)

–          Carrot orange soup

–          Onions

–          Baby carrots

–          Mushroom slices

–          Spoon of red wine vinaigrette

–          Pad of butter

Directions:

1.      Pour carrot orange soup into bowl. Mix in butter and red wine vinaigrette to melt.

2.      Add onions, carrots and mushroom slices from the salad bar. Let them slightly soften.

3.      Take your bowl to the Homeward Bound station and add beef. Plus points if beef chunks are served instead of slices.

3.Pesto quinoa bowl

Ingredients:

–          Quinoa

–          Arugula

–          Garbanzo beans

–          Tofu

–          Bacon

–          Pesto sauce

–          Lemon wedge

Directions:

1.      Add handful of arugula to a bowl.

2.      Add as much quinoa as your heart desires. Make a well in the center of the quinoa.

3.      Add in garbanzo beans, crumbled tofu and bacon to the well

4.      Spoon pesto sauce over your bowl, avoiding the well.

5.      Finish with lemon.

4.Chili corndog boats

*** Disclaimer: Not for the faint of heart. ***

Ingredients:

–          Corndog

–          Vegan Chili

–          Spicy chili paste

–          Shredded cheddar

Directions:

1.      Fill a bowl with some vegan chili from the salad bar.

2.      Take your bowl to the Pacific Rim station and add one spoon of spicy chili paste.

3.      Grab a corndog from the Homeward bound station.

4.      At your table, mix your chili concoction together.

5.      Slice your corndog vertically.

6.      Add a layer of shredded cheddar to the flat side of each corndog half.

7.      Spoon chili over cheddar and share with your homie.

5.Ultimate meat and potatoes grilled cheese

***Disclaimer: Also not for the faint of heart. ***

Ingredients:

–          1 grilled cheese sandwich

–          Au gratin potatoes

–          Roast beef (or whatever carved meat Metro’s doing that day)

–          Bacon

–          Blue cheese

–          Onions

–          Balsamic vinaigrette

Directions:

1.      Open up the grilled cheese and add onions to one side.

2.      Layer au gratin, roast beef, bacon and blue cheese on top of onions.

3.      Drizzle a touch of balsamic vinaigrette over the layers. Feel free to use any acidic dressing to cut through all this meaty righteousness.

4.      Shut the sandwich and hold on to your seat.

These hacks are just the starting point to a world of fantastic food available at your disposal. Grab Metro by the horns. Challenge conventionality. Hold the key to your destiny. Most importantly, remember that all you need is a meal swipe and a spark of insanity.
